Excited for OAH in Philly! My paper focuses on Isaiah King (shown)) and John N. Conna, two Civil War veterans who are chasing Reconstruction’s promise in Alaska. This WIP panel session forced me to put words on a page and fully consider a possible home for the larger project. #amwriting
Happy 10th book pub anniversary of Educational Reconstruction! I am happy with its impact in the fields of Reconstruction Studies, Urban History, History of Education, African American history and Public History. I'm very grateful to now see it on a shelf alongside my other publications.

I wrote this book for a Black reading public. I wrote for Black genealogists, readers of Oprah Book selections, members of ASALH, ABWH, AAIHS, BrANCH, JCWE, AHA, and SHA, and those who remain intellectually curious about the past for understanding the present. I wrote for family and community. 2/3
Final book pub anniversary post: I wrote this book for my diverse communities--academic historian, daughter, niece, cousin and community member of where I have worked after getting my Ph.D. One early reader told me that we need a history of African American porches and porch sitting. 1/3
This centers whiteness and minimizes the porch archives, traditions, and politics of Black communities I'm grateful that reviewers and scholars who have thoughtfully taken up this point, embraced porch archives as a lens, and even situated the part I w/in trauma studies. 2/2.
Book pub anniversary, post 3: We need more books on Black CW Memory and not less. I discussed communities that I knew intimately & left plenty of breadcrumbs for future scholarship. One point that scholars have picked up on is the tendency to reduce Black Civil War Memory to counter-memory. 1/2
Book pub anniversary, post 2: I'm grateful for my writing community who encouraged me to be bold, experiment w/ form, & develop this second book. The porch lessons, for instance, emerged from this community & had the full support of my editor Andy Slap and @fordhampress.bsky.social
Book-pub anniversary, post 1: I learned that is okay to start a project in opposition but not enough to sustain a decade long project. I wanted communities' porch archives to be understood w/in the field of Civil War Memory. Thankful for the communities' trust in me to write this book.
