Reframing Psychedelic Regulation: Tools, not Treatments
In this new article, we propose to regulate psychedelics as psychotherapeutic treatment tools rather than as treatments in their own right.
The use of anesthetics as treatment tools in surgery is a useful analogy.
Also - inviting all the other experts from naturalistic studies is very challenging and requires more time, so we hope this would be next step. This requires to bring together also the voices of psychonauts, retreat providers, curanderos, neo-shamans, DJs, and so on - and hence a much larger study
Indeed, while I am a fan of naturalistic studies, this was a strategic decision to narrow it to clinical studies. The reason is that we wanted to emphasise the importance of context in psychiatry - where it is the least clear. Opening it up to a wider search would have diluted the main goal.
