I had a road to Damascus moment in 1993 when I saw The Marriage of Figaro for the 1st time. I decided that I didn’t want to waste any more time or attention on what’s current, & consequently have very patchy
knowledge of music by… ahem popular beat combos since then, & am content in my ignorance

Staff At Minnesota Deportation Hub Received ‘Obscene’ Trump-Themed Challenge Coins Adorned With Skulls Federal employees involved in the massive operation that led to a surge...

With so much of this Trump stuff, it’s almost impossible to tell if it’s real, or satire, but he does seem to like ludicrous WoW/death metal/Nazi imagery e.g. talkingpointsmemo.com/news/staff-a...

Exclusive: At the mass deportation hub in Minneapolis they're handing out "challenge coins" commemorating oppo "metro surge" as tho it were a scene out of Fallujah in 2006. talkingpointsmemo.com/news/staff-a...

I’m pretty sure the 2nd photo in that thread is of Laurence Harvey not Dirk, but still great thread. Love Dirk’s bruised beauty, wonderful actor.

Tortilla Don Arnoldo, a mashup of omelette Arnold Bennett & a Spanish tortilla. My friend Adriana gets quite annoyed if you call anything a tortilla that has more than oil, eggs, onions & potatoes, but I like the name, and it does taste good. I chucked in some frozen peas too this time. I’m a vandal

This leaves you, if not disgruntled, then far from gruntled?

If you ignore punks goths etc, the vast mass of ordinary U.K. citizens, have not had a distinctive local style of dress since sometime in the 70’s. At that time the French had a distinctive & much more elegant take on “le style anglais”. Such a thing would be impossible now. We all wear American now

Culture: Parkin the memories by Nicola Miller It may have its origins in Yorkshire but for our food writer Nicola Miller, parkin brings back memories of festival time in Mexico

In the 70’s BBC2 used to run themed classic film seasons. I particularly remember a Jean Renoir season. Recently there were some Powell/Pressburger films. It should be permanent fixture & the Ealing comedies would be a great start. Too many people aren’t aware of anything much before Star Wars

Agreed. That’s fucked up, with a distinct air of controlling narcissism. However hypothetically speaking, I can’t imagine that I would greet the news that my wife had embraced veganism with any enthusiasm. But I’d still have to accept it, because it’s her that I love.

There are many ways you adapt your habits to your partner, & food is one of the easiest, but it does niggle. I cook to share, & I miss the foods my partner dislikes. On the other hand, sharing food & eating from the same pot bonds you, & is one of the chief pleasures of life, so you make it happen

Rhubarb Gin A few weeks ago I became the proud owner of about 3 kilos of Rhubarb, cut fresh from the garden.  Usually this would all go into Jam (which most of it will) but this year I really wanted to give Rh…

Absolutely! This is the source recipe, slightly modified. Early forced rhubarb is best, & try to get some with the deepest colour. It’s quite different from anything you might buy. You can use it in cocktails, but also good neat 🙂

I don’t like crowds at the best of times, so now I won’t go to any of these “blockbuster“ shows, until I’m famous enough to be given a private visit (i.e. never). They just make me frustrated, & angry. Ordinary museum or gallery visits are much more rewarding

So heartening to hear this. I made an absolute pig’s ear of a potentially delicious chicken recipe at the weekend. I feel less alone now 🙂

Bill's fundraiser for Grassroots Suicide Prevention Help Bill Rae Smith raise money to support Grassroots Suicide Prevention

It’s a grey dreary morning here, & it seems the world is going to hell in a handcart. But till then, my son is fundraising for Grassroots Suicide Prevention, a great cause, by running a 1/2 marathon right now! Here’s his JustGiving page, if you’d like to help 🙂

It was very good chocolate, not hugely expensive, & widely available. You’d have thought Nestlé would have wanted to keep it going, as a very significant part of their heritage, but sadly no. The assassination attempt on Winston Churchill is a good story too 🙂

Peter's Chocolate - Wikipedia

Their chocolate is pretty good too. I like the Swiss dark milk chocolate, partly because it reminds me of Peter’s chocolate from my childhood (which was the original Swiss milk chocolate). Also the marzipan balls covered in milk chocolate, which made a marzipan lover I know go all wobbly.

Here in Brighton, maybe elsewhere too, almost everyone thanks the driver when they get off the bus. It’s so deeply ingrained, that I believe that even if we had been driven at top speed & crashed, people would still thank the driver as they stumbled from the wreckage. I love it

That is actually my dream wine. I moved into a cheap basement flat near the Angel in the late 70s & the previous tenant left me half a case of Vosne Romanee. It was my first experience of really good wine, & frankly it has never been equalled since

I adored it too. Mackenzie Crook is a genius. Who could imagine that there even could be a magical realist sitcom, let alone that it could be this good. Outstanding.
