The pandemic gave us a rare chance to separate two effects that are normally difficult to disentangle— maternal immunity and age-dependent disease risk — and use that to assess the impact of maternal vaccination on infant RSV burden.

We found that maternal immunity only meaningfully protects newborns when mothers are infected in the last 3 months of pregnancy — and wanes by 6 months. Missing a first RSV season during lockdown led to higher disease rates in later seasons.
