Boundary Waters mining ban overturned in senate vote (50-49). Tillis and Collins join democrats, Hawley does not vote. A win for Twin Metals Minnesota, subsidiary of Chilean mining co Antofagasta. A big mistake.

Editor's choice: the search for life on Mars must avoid contamination by life transported from Earth. Bischof et al. investigate the micro-organisms on and within spacecraft that landed on Mars. How long can they survive on the red planet? 🧪☄️🔭 #planetsci

Map, from polarwx.com, of ECMWF model's forecast for 500mb heights later this week and their rank relative to the historical record for March over North America. A giant pink blob is visible over western North America, indicating an absurdly large area of record-breaking 500mb GPH.
The seasonal anomalousness, as well sheer spatial extent, of upcoming record-shattering Western U.S. heatwave is genuinely startling. This will be associated with, by far, the strongest ridge ever observed during (at least) any Nov-Mar month. #CAwx #AZwx #NMwx #NVwx #UTwx #COwx

Map of the Atlantic Coastal Plain from Georgia to Virginia showing the position of the Orangeburg Scarp, the Mid-Pliocene shoreline from field sites and the literature. Rovere et al 2014, Fig 1. First line of Rovere et al's paper: “The last time in Earth's history that atmospheric CO2 levels were as high as today (~ 400 ppm, Pagani et al., 2009) was the mid-Pliocene (~3.3 to 2.9 Ma), a period that preceded the onset of extensive northern hemisphere glaciation and that was characterized by global mean temperatures as much as 3 °C warmer than the present (Raymo et al., 1996; Dowsett et al., 2009).” Rovere, A., Hearty, P.J., Austermann, J., Mitrovica, J.X., Gale, J., Moucha, R., Forte, A.M., and Raymo, M.E., 2015, Mid-Pliocene shorelines of the US Atlantic Coastal Plain— An improved elevation database with comparison to Earth model predictions: Earth-Science Reviews 145, 117–131.
The Orangeburg Scarp marks the Atlantic coastal plain shoreline during the Mid-Pliocene 3.3-2.9 million years ago, the last time atmospheric CO2 levels were as high as they are "now" (ca. 400 ppm).
From Rovere et al, 2014, Earth-Science Reviews.
Please see figure alt text.
Atmospheric CO2:
Feb. 11, 2025 = 426.62 ppm
29% increase in the past 37 years, 330 ppm in 1989.

Because people asked, I want to point folks to some archiving resources that were circulated at the start of the admin's takedown of federal data at CDC, AskJAN, NIH, and discuss why keeping our data is so important.

The FDA never released a comprehensive list of the drugs it allowed into the U.S. even though they were made by banned factories.
So we made that list for you 👇
Bob Mondello's movie review of young musicologists spending a summer in the Maine woods a century ago morphed into a personal story about the discovery of long recording of his father's voice as a young man, after losing a short voice mail, is the BEST I've heard on NPR-ATC in many years
Thank you.
I agree. Working on a new report on this right now. What happened in Atlanta today is significantly worse than it even appears on the surface. I daresay I no longer hold out much hope that this fall will be anything but utter—and scary—chaos.
A free and fair election increasingly feels unthinkable.
