And I've been iching to carve a Canadian Cross. So much so, that I decided to do a carving of the Crowns of Canada. Tudor, St Edwards, and Canadian. Past, present, and future. Because, that's what I do when my interest gets piqued...

I'll tell ya. I wandered down more than a one rabbit hole, on this one.

So yeah. Safe to say that it piqued my interest. And that's where I come back into it, as the Royal Crown is ubiquitous within Canada's military. I mean I have carved a hockey sock full of St Edward's crosses.

In fact with in the Commonwealth most of the countries have always made use of the crown that “surmounts the Royal Cypher”, for their heraldic devices. But now Canada now joins Scotland. Yep. The Maple Leaf and the Thistle have their Royal Crowns, and Royal Cyphers.

A few years back these three things came into some sort of “syzygy”, when I read, (in 2023), that King Charles had approved a “Royal Canadian Crown”. This is kind of a big deal, from a “Heraldic” point of view.

Something that a lot of you do know about me is that I like to carve stuff. Another thing that you probably know about me is that a lot of my carvings have a military theme. Now, something that a lot of people don't know about me is that I am a bit of a history buff.

The smaller was cut off something and laid under my table saw until I got tired of sweeping around it. Anyway, I think that they turned out “ok”. And they tend to add a degree of organization to my somewhat chaotic “Carving Wall”. And in doing so, they free up more space from a couple more pieces.

But anyway this isn't about those that meet their fiery end. This is about two that live on as display boards for some of my spoons. The bigger of the two was part of a piece of live edge that was gifted to me by my brother's neighbour, in NB.

But still. You just can't want to throw them out. And you wind up tripping over them, (some times quite literally), for the next 4 or five months, (years). Until you finally. Reluctantly. Maybe even begrudgingly toss it in the burn pit...

Anyway, you just can't bring yourself to toss it in the “scrap bin”. Cause, damn it! They got character! But they are not really big enough or solid enough to really to do anything with...

So, what to do with offcuts? Not all offcuts, of course. Some are no good for much of anything. But you always have a couple, laying around, that kinda look cool. Right? You know how it is. You look at the grain. Or maybe there's a knot running through it...

For all these reasons, (and maybe one or two more), it has an affectionate, (and sometimes derisive), Nickname. Ladies and Gentlemen... "The Cornflake"!!

It signified that you were able to salute an officer... But not very much more than that. We had to wear it until we completed our trades training. GoD! We were all so freakin happy to get rid of them. You know what? It was also a brassy colour.

It is a stylistic representation of our three military services. The Navy with the anchor. The Army and their pointy swords.😉 And the Air Force with the eagle. Yes, I know. All very majestic and symbolic. For many of us it was the first cap badge that we were given, during our basic training.

OK Here is one that I just finished up, today. I've wanted to do this one for a very long time. Now, once again, for those of you who are not familiar with the Canadian military, this is the crest of the Canadian Armed Forces.
