Luxon fires up at Peters: NZ First responsible for PM Jacinda Ardern The Prime Minister says Winston Peters is trying to 'scaremonger'.

Who needs enemies when you have friends like these? And *still* they bang on and character assassinate Dame Jacinda. I suppose when one achieved nothing in your term one needs to deflect.

It's been apalling for decades.
They even go into schools to do if. I've seen first hand in my life how instutionally racist the police are.

Of course it didn't. They were desperate to give some major corporate welfare to their mates.

China’s vast nuclear power sector now able to build 50 reactors at a time China has more reactors under construction than the rest of the world combined, as it aims to become a global leader in nuclear power.

China gets it.

Hiking the OCR is not even a proper option. Central bankers continue to think they control economies. Generating unemployment in an attempt to control supply side inflation is as crazy now as it has always been.

Both. Private debt concentrates money into financial speculating which takes it away from paying wages. Private debt is a true burden on the private sector. This is in complete contrast to public debt which is not.

Benefit warning for KiwiSaver withdrawals More than $49 million was withdrawn from KiwiSaver in March for financial hardship reasons by 5610 people.

It's this kind of nonense that makes an even stronger case for UBI. Get rid of the true bureaucracy.

Good news. Keep a terrible leader around. Refuses to answer questions. Sums it up.

UBI is worth doing REGARDLESS of the degree of unemployment that AI may cause. Productivity growth stopped being widely shared via wages in the 1970s. For 50 years, the fruits of our collective labor have concentrated at the top. Only UBI can directly distribute those fruits equally to ALL.

Losing my mind reading Dann, Malpass, Tibshraeny, (etc) sweating about Govt 'returning to surplus'. Surely the reckonomics commentariat should understand balance sheets?
Let's see if I can make it simple. Here's how much we spend offshore and how much we earn. Take a minnit... [🧵 1/n]

Palantir posts mini-manifesto denouncing inclusivity and ‘regressive’ cultures | TechCrunch Palantir's ideological bent has come under more scrutiny as it's worked with ICE and positioned itself as a defender of "the West."

Like a 21st Century Techno Gestapo manifesto. "Hello fascists, we have a product for you!"

Night-time escapes from floodwaters: Mayor says better warnings needed People were chest high in floodwater taking young children out and crossing rail bridges to get to safe ground, "and this was 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning," mayor says.

RBNZ and Gov have no idea what makes jobs or not. They are slaves to failed neoclassical economics.

Full employment is possible as we have been there before.

3 days ago 0 0 0 0

Agreed but how do the unemployed get those jobs? Without a Job Guarantee they will be competing with those who already have jobs.

And without a Guarantee there are a fixed number of jobs. Not a job for any unemployed person, guaranteed.

They can kill welfare without it.

You can create the jobs sure. However many will end up going to people already employed if there is a conventional recruitment process. The already employed find it easier to get jobs. The point of Job Guarantee jobs is they are available to any who want them.

Well that's not a Job Guarantee. Worrying about a not Job Guarantee isn't a reason to avoid doing an actual Job Guarantee.

3 days ago 1 0 1 0

Misuse how? There would be a meaningful job for anybody who wants it. No obligation to take it.

3 days ago 0 0 1 0

If they were simply passing on costs...then they wouldn't have soaring profits. This fact alone exposes them for what they are.

Job Guarantee now. Train people to install and run the Grid of The Future.

It's also structural. The "reforms" of the 80s and 90s set things up to funnel more and more to the rich in the first place. This was the goal of neoliberalism. To restore class power to the rich that had been eroded post WWII.

Exactly. Even if you care only for numbers, its lost GDP.

There’s no reason to listen to millionaires wailing about mining projects OPINION: In the real world, the Government needs money to pay for things, and that requires well-paying jobs and tax revenue.

Not convinced. This article hand waving away the ecological damage..

"The economic benefit to New Zealand is estimated at 5.8 billion with 1.8 billion being receipted to the Crown over the course of the project."

Financial speculators wouldn't enjoy that though.

Can you plot interest rates against employment and CPI?

I've done this for Australia and there is no mathematical correlation.
