What if we tried loving one another, eating delicious food, making art...what if we practiced patience, helped those who need it, found ways to make life easier for all, moved our bodies, and slept cozily in nice warm beds. How about we see how that goes for a while, instead of whatever all this is

Grief is insane and the only thing that helps is coupling it with gratitude for loving someone so much.
The authoritarians and know-nothings donβt want us to imagine better futures, better worlds, and thatβs precisely what fantasy does. In the words of Katherine Rundell, βThe imagination is the primary and first site of resistance.β
[βFantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, donβt we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if weβre partisans of liberty, then itβs our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.β]

It may feel weird or somehow improper to talk about your art or your writing, but we need it. It canβt be wall-to-wall nightmare all the time. Art is both counterweight and context. Itβs escape and enlightenment and a mirror of our own exasperation. We need it. We NEED it. Keep showing us.

So I kind of had to reread the first few chapters bc the night I read this book was such a blur. The first thing about this story that I thought was strange was how Ododo just kind of accepted being kidnapped. Her fear was mentioned a few times and her kind of playing along, but she was also
One of my 2025 goals is to catch up on book reviews for all the books I really loved last year and never got a chance to chat about online. I think i also want to do more in-depth reviews for books I've read more recently that I only discussed on a surface level as well.
