It’s so striking too to hear from panelists about how being homeless at the same time as someone is a youth just learning about “how the world works” (what’s a copay, how to pay rent, etc.) makes things even harder.

Housing is so important though panelists also note that even once in housing they still have a “survival mindset” for a while — which can impact whether they have headspace to access healthcare — and need help adjusting (great suggestion from Onyx for more peer support).
In addition to the role of stigma (about homelessness, mental health, and more) also lots of discussion about concerns related to healthcare costs, leading to avoiding healthcare — highlighting how “healthcare should be seen as a necessity not a luxury” (panelist Onyx)
Panelist Majé avoided healthcare because “I didn’t want to be associated with all the things associated with homelessness” — “you can see the switch in people” when they know you are homeless, which extends to healthcare providers too.
An amazing panel today of youth sharing their experiences related to health and healthcare when homeless.

Urging everyone to watch and *share* this powerful video from @invisiblepeople.tv. Criminalization of homelessness does not work.
Bay Area friends: I’ll be joining KQED Forum live tomorrow (7/22) at 9am PST, along with @mkushel.bsky.social. The conversation will be hosted by @alexis-madrigal.bsky.social.
Important new article led by @maxjordan.bsky.social - shows that USMLE QBanks often present patients experiencing homelessness in ways that are stereotypical & stigmatizing. This is how med students learn —> important implications for care. We need to do a lot of work / retraining here.
Glad to be a guest on this NPR WABE podcast on homelessness and health. urldefense.com/v3/__https:/...
The article cites research I was part of led by Tom Byrne & Dennis Culhane (w/others) and also research on (to summarize bluntly) premature aging among people experiencing homelessness by @mkushel.bsky.social
Homelessness is rising among older adults, driven by lack of affordable housing paired with a late Baby Boom cohort effect (entire generation coming of age amidst recession and poor job opportunities). Good deep dive in @nytimes.com www.nytimes.com/2025/05/27/u...
I was thrilled to comment on the great work of Veronica Garrison, @cepollack.bsky.social, and others about their new nationwide measure of multiple housing challenges, including quality, affordability, and neighborhoods. ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2...

Wagaman presenting on a shared housing program for LGBTQ+ pregnant and/or parenting youth.
Slide says “How we do it: Guiding values.”
Loved hearing about how their project and work together was so grounded in core values (that were developed together with the youth with lived experience). #HxHLab
Her role was one part of a team-based approach modeled on critical time intervention for homeless youth — called Charge Up! (PI Sarah Narendorf). #HxHLab

A photo of a zoom webinar slide showing photos and names of four speakers.
There are four fantastic speakers at today’s panel — many thanks to them — sharing about two interventions related to youth and homelessness / housing. Powerful to hear from researchers + those with lived experience about these community-based projects. #HxHLab
Kemi provided a shocking statistic: 1 in 8 NYC schoolchildren is experiencing homelessness.
After a welcome from Health x Housing Lab co-director @giselle-ashley.bsky.social, Kemi Adebisi-Oke — an individual with lived experience of youth homelessness and HxH Lab Speakers Bureau & Peer Network member — provides powerful opening remarks. #HxHLab
Happening now! #HxHLab seminar on housing interventions for young adults. 👇
Many people who exp homelessness work all day--the public just doesn't see them or recognize them. (Neighbors fought against these homeless shelters for working folks, too)
Strongly recommend @brian-goldstone.bsky.social book "There is no place for us" to learn more.
