I know exactly what you mean 😆 I tried that first, which is why I settled for a humanoid form with the hireling. If only there was a height mod. I actually tried using stairs to trick the game but it didn't work.

I got a hireling and use a mod to give them his face. Then I have another mod for hugs & kisses, perhaps a spicy mod too 🖤 100% worth dealing with the mod manager for.
