I always thought Sun Tzu's "Art of War" was a little simplistic and obvious but it turns out yes, you do literally need to tell the Secretary of War "you need to feed your troops and keep them from being wiped out by preventable diseases"

it's funny too because I'm generally impatient about RPGs taking a long time in the intro, but it somehow worked in DQ7. I think it's because yeah there's no combat but you're still running around on an adventure without a ton of long dialogue sequences.

I’m actually kind of sad the intro is so famous because I think the decision to not have monsters is genius and actually creates a feeling of kids playing while also also contrasting with the darker elements when you go to the past. Like it does create some sense of danger when monsters show up

I've always been a bit iffy on DQ - I think something about the art style and like general vibes didn't quite click for me, but something about 7 really worked. I think because the world itself is so odd and wrong, the art style doesn't feel at odds?

I need to go back to it, was really enjoying it

For all its faults and changes, RE's fascinating because like NONE of those things are consistent and yet all of these disparate things are under the same RE banner. and I really don't know many other series that have anything close to the same amount of variance among entries.
