This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.
This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

This is one of the most beautiful things I have witnessed, the craft here is impeccable.
"We are not the elites the billionaires claim we are. Most professors don’t have tenure. The humanities professoriate don’t even have full time jobs, have been known to sleep in their cars. How did these inconsequential people become enemies of the state?"

Your regular reminder that almost everything Trump is getting away with is not because of presidential strength, but because of congressional weakness and judicial deference.
The constitutional tools are already there to fix this, but those who can fix it are refusing to do so.
Before press came in — but while live feed was running on Bukele’s feed — Trump said to him: “home-growns are next. … You’re gonna need to build about 5 more places.”

“we're joining with the ACLU to call on college and university leaders to:
* Reject any federal pressure to surveil or punish noncitizen students and faculty for their constitutionally protected speech
* Uphold free speech protections for all students and scholars, regardless of nationality

Don't send me AI-generated emails. Send me typos, say the wrong thing, use too many exclamation marks, repeat yourself. I value your humanity, perfection is boring and empty.

Since there seem to be a lot of new professors on Bluesky, I'll re-share this link to the AAUP's "Organize Every Campus" campaign. This is a critical time for faculty to organize in defense of our students, ourselves and co-workers, and the institutions we believe in. Join us!
I'm still very lost on here. The poets have organized and gathered, but with my weird threads and random interests on twitter. This starter pack is an attempt to include some of those names, though many are missing. Just a messy attempt.🙏
We need a book twitter list too?
