With all the new attention NIGHT OF THE JUGGLER has gotten, I really bristle at the over-selling of replacement director Robert Butler’s creative contribution. This is a Sidney Furie film, folks, no matter what the credits tell you. Don’t just take my word for it. Here’s James Brolin in IndieWire:

I recently created a video essay on John Guillermin for the Blu ray of Bridge at Remagen. Entered into it knowing he had a small army of critical defenders but still skeptical. Exited convinced there was more to him. Rapture (1965) is a masterpiece. Blue Max (1966) is his testament film.

I’ll challenge you here. What have you seen? Kubrick is acknowledged to have stolen from him. Leone prized his Appaloosa above all American westerns. Joe Dante said he thought he was one of directors he thought was “reinventing cinema.” I think you’re misinformed, honestly.

Furie is not a hack. He’s one of the best overlooked filmmakers, with a number of masterpieces to his name. The Leather Boys, Ipcress, Boys in Company C, The Entity, all with identifiable style and thematic preoccupation. There’s a tribute box set with tributes by a very impressive roster of names.

Visited director Irving Rapper’s grave today, placed a rock on the headstone, and recited a Jewish remembrance prayer. Irving is buried next to his sister Hannah in Queens. The rock was picked from near his old home in Hollywood and transported cross-country for the occasion.

11 features and counting – I’ve had a funky little film career so far

Sidney J. Furie had been ignored for too long, and I felt it my duty to set the record straight and give him his due. I wrote the first book on his life and career, and produced this tribute box set from Imprint. Who’s good for one classic? This guy’s been good for a number of them!
