🎶 Were you making fun of me with some esoteric joke?
Now I want to sell my house and set fire to all my clothes
And hire a priest to come and exorcise my demons
Even if I die screaming
And I hope you hear it 🎶

Gas “bullets” and their wakes in the Orion Nebula. Vibrant blue tips, indicating iron atoms, lead long orange-red tubular wakes of heated molecular hydrogen gas. Bright white stars are scattered throughout the image, varying in size.
Throwback post: This week's image is of the Orion "Bullets," which was captured with Gemini’s GSAOI. These structures result from iron gas (blue tips) rushing through neutral hydrogen gas (red pillars) due to nearby star formation. Check out a few paper highlights in the thread!

Never thought I'd be able to see a spider's heart beating with the naked eye. 🕷️ Cool story by Olivia Maule at @science.org
As a reminder, NASA's entire budget, *including* human spaceflight (which is about half of it), is already less than 0.4% of US federal spending. As a comparison, defense spending, even when NOT actively starting wars, is more than 10% (with a huge increase proposed for FY2027).
This is more broadly generalizable: If you don't do the research yourself, you have no idea if AI is making stuff up. And if you do the research yourself, then AI isn't saving you much labor, if any.

A vertical long-exposure photograph of the Milky Way stretching over the Gemini South Telescope, featuring a bright green and orange meteor streak, the Magellanic Clouds, and atmospheric airglow. Also visible in the background is the NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory.

SCOOP: Two weeks ago, the head of the CDC delayed publication of a report showing covid vaccine cut likelihood of ER visits and hospitalizations by half. Now that report is no longer allowed to be published in CDC’s flagship scientific journal. My latest. 1/2

I get to write about some pretty unusual medical case reports for @livescience.com, and this one was a doozy. A woman in the UK suddenly started hearing voices urging her to get medical attention for a brain tumor, despite having no symptoms or prior diagnosis. The "voices" turned out to be right 🧪

Cover of report "Mission Aborted: how NASA illegally implemented the president's budget request without congressional approval. Minority staff report, prepared by members of the committee on science, space, and technology, us house of representatives, April 2026
This report came out today by minority staff of the House science committee on how three NASA missions were aborted due to NASA illegally following the FY26 president's budget request instead of congressionally approved budget. Very important reading. 🔭🧪 democrats-science.house.gov/staff-report...

Wait I am seeing this from Ohio: "OHIO will continue to offer a Bachelor of Science in Physics." news.ohio.edu/news/2026/03...
insane to eliminate physics at Ohio U given they have an accelerator lab and guaranteed time at MDM at Kitt Peak.... very disappointing to read this today
Physics bachelors programs at Bowling Green, Kent State, Ohio U, and Wright State will be eliminated! ⚛️🧪🔭
Our REU renewal was funded!
We found out today so we are accepting applications now! Like right now!
