Or to put it differently: anyone who can set up and run an appview can also set up and run a relay trivially in comparison

I feel like arguing exactly how many relays there are and how expensive they are to run is kinda pointless, they're not the hardest to make and not the most important piece of the puzzle, the appview is; the relay can be ignored for any practical purposes when talking about decentralization imho
Yeah what I mean is, I remember the framing from Bluesky from 2023-24 like "we imagine the relays/appviews will be kind of like the web search engines are now, i.e. there will be multiple but not *that* many of them"
I feel like a lot of people here believe that "it's ok and cool if *we're* the ones doing it, because we are right"…
I keep hearing about this issue, and I wonder if this really is something not fixable?…
I mean it's not impossible (or rather: it's likely) that we're going to have things like this at some point, PDSes that have a bunch of people on them but that have been abandoned by admins and overrun by spambots… the difference being that it's easier/possible to migrate off of them
But this is something that they *themselves* have been saying from the beginning
I'm so fucking angry… why are people like this 😑 why are so many people like this. It's basically Twitter again, just with a different group of people being nasty…
Ok, where exactly does it say in the blog post that it was vibecoded ai slop?
No, it wasn't
I mean the postmortem doesn't mention anything about AI, what this quoted person says is their interpretation (presented without any proof)
"who cares if im spreading disinfo, its fun if it means i can dunk on people"
is litterally the same mindset gamergates, chuds, or shit like libsoftiktok do...
Oh yeah this one, I don't think I've seen an attempt at Python and Ruby
There's surprisingly many people on this website who know better how one should build very complex distributed systems than the people in the room who are building very complex distributed systems…
so if you’re there it must be because you genuinely want the mission to succeed and root for the pirate ship to win. this means you (or your teammates) can’t afford or tolerate sloppy work because that brings the ship down. code review has always been pretty tight there and that wouldn’t change.
it isn’t too fun to work on an open source product with a userbase that unironically loves to “bully the devs” but will never actually jump ship. i think anyone who can do the technical work at bluesky could find a higher paying and much less stressful job. this acts as a filter for who works there
i doubt my word would convince the “concerned public” but this is a point i wish was more broadly understood. you can assume a high level of baseline care about the code because otherwise neither the company nor the product nor the protocol would survive. and engineers there are mostly ideological
with bluesky, it's public knowledge that
- code is almost entirely open source
- it's the same team working on it that wrote it originally from scratch
- they've successfully scaled it up to current usage and solved nontrivial engineering challenges (and invented a new internet protocol)
Like I said before, we all went insane one way or another
Dan's posts, but every quoted post is hidden because it's either been deleted or because someone is blocking someone else

😍 I love them
dan @danabra.mov: this maybe explains the mindset better. for a lot of people it seems to be a desperate attempt to forcememe "ai is bad for your company" into reality quoting Blocked post (@dragoncobolt.bsky.social): I don’t know or really care if they’re lying or telling the gods honest truth: I want it to percolate into the money ghouls petrified brains that AI is a stinker, a loser, a bad investment quoting Rebecca Watson @skepchick.org: Bsky staff is scrambling to convince ppl that today's outage has nothing to do with their embrace of ai. That's great. We should make them scramble more. The cost of replacing competent humans with AI needs to be greater on every single level for every single company. dan abramov again: some of these definitely cross into fanfiction quoting lex (they/them) @just-slothlike.bsky.social: is it true? probably not. but we need to make them feel the cold hand of guilt as they lay awake at 3 am thinking about their lives and getting up to ask claude how to feel about it

Illegal no, sometimes annoying, depends heavily on how exactly that looks
Maybe make it so the old images embed renders as a grid and gallery embed renders as a carousel, and for 2-4 images you can pick how it's saved?
this is a @baileytownsend.dev appreciation post:
I love the vibe/energy you bring to the room, you chose important projects that connect protocol theory to real users, and provide a whole lot of tech and social glue.
thank you!
