I've seen or been part of too many situations where folk thought 1) or 2) were protections. Organization change happens for all sorts of reasons but thinking it won't happen if you're an expert and your job has to be done is a mistake we all make.
Tony Bates reflected on why he was fired 25 years ago. it's an interesting read but part of the framing is that it was despite: 1) expertise recognized by peers 2) doing good & needed work. Institutional politics aside, structural change whether good, bad, or indifferent is rarely about 1) or 2)
