Blue-spotted salamanders! Coming out of hibernation and climbing across SNOW HILLS on Presque Île (MI) to make it to breeding habitat. Incredible! Might have swabbed some with some new friends at the NMU bio dept. to see if there's any chytrid lying around ...

An incredible week at Friday Harbour Labs in WA for an NSF-funded organismal modelling workshop (OSyM). So much learning, so many wonderful humans; amazing science in an amazing setting -- I can't recommend it enough. They have more down the pipeline, apply!

In our new paper, we explore the new frontier of active learning: student-designed games. Learn course concepts, link them to game mechanics, create an artifact to reinforce learning. Instill class community and play some wildly creative submissions! (2/2) journals.asm.org/eprint/JVPHV...

CAF designed logo for student submission called "Ecology Monopoly"

How can we encourage deep learning by students? It turns out that standardized testing leads to x1.5 higher likelihood of students failing a class compared to active learning methods, does not promote long-term information retention, and is seeded with stress and competition. (1/2)

Phytotelmata Schlippe Justicia et al. describe small pools of water created by plant structures called ‘phytotelma’ that serve as mini-ecosystems.

You all know how precious and fascinating Phytotelmata are, right?
Right?

I got to try my hand at the @esajournals.bsky.social #DiseaseEcologySection logo design for 2026. I've designed 3 logos that will be at #ESA2026 -- public vote will decide the banner holder for the next calendar year. This week I've has a re-occurring fever dream where I am doing stand-up comedy to an audience (who are all horses) and open with: "Why the long faces?"; which is followed by dream-me hysterically laughing while the horses watch silently. I just need to know what my subconscious is trying to tell me.

A year-long project where I painted a watercolour cat every month. A reason to keep painting, a reason to keep creating. Inspired by travel, friendships, learning, and death.

September cat, the last cat, emerges from a time of grief and reflection. 🐈‍⬛ ❤️

Ecology and evolution of virulence Silva and King discuss the concept of virulence and the ecological and evolutionary factors that shape it.

Interested in #virulence? Not sure what it is - or how to explain it? Just curious? 🧐🦠🧬🦋

@kayla-king.bsky.social and I just wrote a Primer for @currentbiology.bsky.social on the ecology and evolution of virulence!

Check it below and share :)

Local adaptation? Coevolution? There are some really interesting dynamics at play here that I can't wait to sink my teeth into. I am currently waiting on some funding decisions, but if this sounds fun or cool or anything in between please reach out! (3/3) Thank you so much to the organizers!

At the Hite Lab (UW Madison, USA) we find that hosts are castrated by parasitic tapeworms and the exposed females maximise their terminal investment. These effects are both sex and strain specific giving rise to super cool implications for infection and population dynamics (2/n)

@eseb2025.bsky.social has been such a blast! I presented during the "Evolution of biotic interactions across biotic scales" about host fitness consequences in response to parasitic interactions (1/n)

Graphical abstract demonstrating trophically-transmitted parasite

🚨New paper alert!🚨

Tapeworms don’t just appear inside fish or birds. They travel there. Our latest paper tracks the first step of that journey: detecting parasites in first-intermediate hosts when they are rare + microscopic. We also developed primers/probes to detect parasites across taxa! (1/3)
