Did you say glacier-compressed wood ? 🧊
Typical ovoid cross section of a glacier-borne subfossil wood! 🌲

News: a leading NSF supported University of Oklahoma atmospheric science summer undergraduate research program that has mentored hundreds of top atmospheric scientists over two decades has been canceled for 2026 due to funding loss. (repost w/correct link) More: tinyurl.com/3zjzf7vu
Incredible satellite imagery of the tornado outbreak underway across the central United States.
Rep. Chu brings up the fact that FEMA is approving disaster requests from Republican states but not Democratic states.
She asks Vought about it, and he basically says it's not a problem. "No one has looked harder at FEMA funding than us."
NOAA GOES 18 weather satellite’s Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) instrument detected the atmospheric re-entry of NASA’s Artemis II Orion capsule over the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and southern California just before 23:56 GMT — too cool! #ArtemisII #NASA #NOAA
The #ArtemisII crew just passed behind the Moon and have lost contact for around 40 minutes. Utter isolation, magnificent desolation.
I relate so much to this. The idea of teaching was terrifying at first. Now I can't imagine doing anything else.
"Looking back, saying “yes” to teaching was one of the most transformative decisions of my career. It didn’t just make me a better educator; it made me a better scientist."
I would like to take this opportunity to vomit.
Truly disgusting language from NSF.
Trump's 2027 budget proposes cuts of:
🔻 $5.8 billion to NIH
🔻 $5.6 billion to NASA
🔻 $4.8 billion to NSF
🔻 $4.6 billion to EPA
🔻 $2.9 billion to CDC
🔻 $1.6 billion to NOAA
If these science cuts pass they will make the US a less healthy and less safe place to live.
People react to big science and art the same way for a reason - both express our humanity by providing new eyes to see the world.
The #ArtemisII crew includes the first person of color, the first woman, and the first non-American to (hopefully) fly beyond Earth orbit. You won't hear much on this from NASA, which has rolled back DEI initiatives over the past year.

Line graph time series of cumulative glacier mass balance relative to 1970 for the period of 1950 to 2025. There is a long-term decreasing trend through the entire time series.
🚨 My graphic showing cumulative change in the mass of reference glaciers around the world has now been updated with 2025's data. We are rapidly losing ice.

Just in: UCAR has filed a lawsuit against NSF, the Commerce Dept, NOAA, and OMB to prevent the dismantling of NCAR, alleging "violations of the Constitution and the Administrative Procedure Act."
If you're getting weather warnings from bluesky, there are bots that report notices directly from your local National Weather Service office. For example, if you're in the DC area, you might want to follow @was.nws-bot.us. I've found it helpful.
A fun fact about tornadoes is they're shifting outside of historical tornado alley and moving eastward into more populated areas.
This is not me saying they're going to be more normal in DC
Time is running out to email NSF_NCAR@nsf.gov to ask them to keep NCAR whole! Need inspiration? Check out a small collection of some of the many letters that have been submitted so far: wclivestream.com/ncar_letters/ #SaveNCAR
Ohio Republican U.S. Sen. Jon Husted can't leave Washington, D.C., to testify in the largest public corruption trial in Ohio history due to the "Iran war," the defense attorneys said, but did find time to return to the state to attend a fundraiser. ohiocapitaljournal.com/2026/03/09/h...
Heartbreaking.
NSF has put out a “Dear Colleague Letter” asking how to dismantle NCAR, the premier public atmospheric sciences center in the US. We must reject the premise. As a dedicated center bringing together scientists across disciplines and across the world, NCAR science has saved lives for over 65 years.
I wish I could say this warms my heart, but it doesn’t. Not at all. And I think it is important to share this on the day the 2026 Winter Olympics end.
