In 1887, British forces kidnapped & exiled the King of Opobo in today’s Nigeria. British Palm oil traders had persuaded the government that the tariffs he imposed restricted their profits. It was a milestone in the Scramble for Africa and indirect rule by Britain.

BBC One - Wild London Sir David Attenborough explores the surprising wildlife of his hometown – London.

What a joyous programme (and a far right propaganda myth buster). Good on you Sadiq Khan for overseeing the introduction of wild beavers to London. Wonderful!

Declaration today by B'Tselem and PHRI that #genocide is being committed in #Gaza confirms growing consensus by human rights groups. Next year, we in #education must reflect this when teaching genocide since #Holocaust. This means we must also challenge prior policy of silence on matter by HMDT

British spy's account sheds light on role in 1953 Iranian coup Interview given by MI6 officer in 1980s was discovered in research for new documentary

How Britain brought about regime change in Iran in 1953: by overthrowing a democratically elected government in favour of an autocracy after it threatened to nationalise Anglo-Iranian Oil (later BP) & use the revenue to benefit Iranians.

'Madleen' was on a mission of urgency after a year of set backs, carrying baby formula, food, medicine & basic humanity. Then came unidentified vessels, speedboats, quadcopters & Israeli soldiers. @franceskalbs.bsky.social recounts what happened in real-time as she spoke to the crew live.

She reminds us that #Madleen was a UK-flagged boat seized in international waters. Israel's interception is an act of piracy.

Abduction is illegal, as is their siege, genocide, occupation and countless other war crimes across Palestine.

We Need to Challenge “Legacies” as Well as “Balance” When Teaching the British Empire Alan Lester Balance Fortunately educators are now increasingly sceptical about the idea of teaching the British Empire as a matter of balance between the ‘good’ and the ‘bad&#8217…

Now updated to consider how teachers might also frame post-war immigration as a radical discontinuity rather than ‘legacy’ of Empire.

Zadie Smith and Ian McEwan among 380 writers and groups to call Gaza war ‘genocide’ Letter also signed by Hanif Kureishi and Russell T Davies urges ceasefire and unrestricted distribution of aid

Setting aside post-hoc legal definitions, there could not be a clearer instance of genocide. The closest historical parallel is the German colonial genocide in which Herero & Nama people who survived mass killing were forced into the desert to starve, 1904-08.

I am so excited about the latest @empirepoduk.bsky.social episodes with @sathnam.bsky.social on Kew Gardens and gardening, so many ideas to weave in more environmental history in the teaching of colonialism. Oh, and I can't wait for the Opium series!
