In 1988 an innocuous Australian government agency was tasked with gathering statistics for industry. Its work made it a flashpoint for critics who charged that it helped rationalise climate denial.

Incredible how much the media has spent talking about hate speech laws and yet none of the thousands of articles on Hanson mention she recently was found by a federal court of breaching hate speech laws.
Chris Minns is calling Grace Tame a terrorist and One Nation is 2 points away being the most popular party in Australia.
Everything is going well!
It’s amazing how far it can take you in this country.
France has ended up in a strange position after using some €250bn of tax-payer money to build a fleet of nuclear power stations. Wind and solar power is merrily entering the French power market at prices nuclear production can't match, resulting in huge surpluses of power.

Both major parties were so committed to criminalising criticism of Israel they rushed through legislation that is fundamentally opposed to their own values, and are reaping the consequences. No normal Australian wanted these laws. The Coalition split is just the first symptom of this disconnect.
Record temperatures, bushfires, meh fire up those data centres that use stonks of water and require a shit tonne of electricity

Two things to learn from this.
1. The rightwing newspapers are lobby groups whose purpose is to advance the class interest of their proprietors.
2. Lobbyists for the rich and powerful lose their jobs if they are not prepared to lie.

Extreme heat training has now become standard for cyclists heading into big races in hot climates, and the advance of climate change is forcing a quiet, uneasy confrontation with its relationship to fossil fuels ahead of this year's Tour Down Under.
New from me on The Guardian:
Please, for the hundredth time, avail yourselves of this tremendous resource from the brilliant @shanley.com and co for more on network state nonsense and how it is underpinning so much technofascism today: www.vcinfodocs.com
I’d say “shame on the SMH”, but I’m not sure that covers the depths of my reaction. This is hideous behaviour from our media.
Respondents to the poll were asked whether the government should “ban pro-Palestine marches”. Not white supremacist marches, not pro-Nazi marches, not White Australia marches or anti-immigration marches. Just pro-Palestine marches.
This is wonderful stuff.
In many random conversations, when I mention Finland's approach, people are keen.
For years Finland media literacy classes teach spotting fake news, misinformation and disinformation; building resilience.
If you want to stop children from drowning, do you erect a high fence or teach them to swim.
The photo of a solar farm under a cloudy sky is a *choice*.
An image branded by Hancock Iron Ore that says "Powering Al - Powering Australia Al requires vast amounts of reliable electricity to operate It cannot function on intermittent energy sources like solar and wind Without sufficient dependable electricity, Australia's Al development will suffer, productivity will decline, international competitiveness will weaken, and national revenue will be negatively impacted Reliable power isn't just essential for Al, it's essential for Australia's future."
Found AI's number one Australian fan. This is real. I'm not going to explain how I came by it. @ketanjoshi.co and @timinclimate.bsky.social will love* it.
No doubt this would also be the case in Australia.
can anyone who understands finance lingo tell me if this is a good or bad sign??
The State Library of Victoria’s ‘major’ proposed cuts include slashing the number of reference librarians and free computers for public access. Some staff are shocked.
“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”
“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath
Some costs aren’t costs.
$7770 a day to keep a youth in custody.
$6000 a year for a year of high school.
Make it make sense. Violent crime is down per capita.
The "crime wave" percentage increase talked about is actually mainly fuelled by "theft from a motor vehicle."
At what point is crime a welfare issue??

In Academic Board this week, Vice-Chancellor Sharon Pickering announced that Monash University will end its controversial partnership with fossil fuel giant Woodside Energy. Vice-Chancellor Pickering also said that the Woodside Building will eventually be renamed.
Jan for those of us outside the country, will this conversation be recorded? Would love to hear it.
Solar’s price drop is astonishing: panels are now 98% cheaper than when I first analyzed them in 2004.
Today, building a fence with solar can be cheaper than using wood.
thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.
now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.
Vogue's absorption of and closure of Teen Vogue feels like -- is -- a direct attack on a new generation of queer journalists who were committed to excellence and the power of journalism to illuminate the stories of people at the margins.
And it impacts all of us, no matter our age.
Interesting that 1 and 6 are split. Surely there’s a way to combine these, and reinforce the benefits of non-car travel for those who live in places where it’s viable.
