I'm not sure if I had noticed if it hadn't been an undergrad student. It just looked too elaborate. But with a more senior author it could have passed since all facts were correct and more elaborate style would have been credible.

I was evaluating essays by undergrads and thought that it would be difficult to recognise AI-generated ones, if any. Eventually found one and it was surprisingly easy after reading more than 10 hand-written ones! #AI #cheating

Imagine what would happen to leading politicians in any actually non-corrupt country if this strong evidence of them raping a child would emerge.

Letters of children from American concentration camps. The camps were a disgrace for Nazi Germany, and they are a disgrace for the USA today.

I can't overstate what it means for Puerto Ricans to see an album so rooted in our culture, our language, in salsa, plena, bomba, and reggaeton to be album of the year.

This album is unapologetically Boricua and it was the most streamed album last year and won album of the year. I'm in tears.

After Trump Officials Cut Food Aid to Kenya, Children Starved to Death “Brutal and traumatizing”: Interviews and a trove of internal documents show government officials and aid workers desperately tried to warn Trump advisers about impending disaster and death.

“There was zero plan, except causing pain,” said one U.N. official about the Trump administration’s decision to stop funding the group with no notice or communication. “And that is not forgivable.”

Israelin asevoimat on surmannut Gazassa tänään vähintään yhden palestiinalaisen. Uhri oli 11-vuotias lapsi.

Israel on ilmoittanut eväävänsä 25 humanitaariselta järjestöltä luvan toimia Gazassa. Merkittävin kielletyistä järjestöistä on Lääkärit ilman rajoja.

Scientists skip key US meetings — and seize on smaller alternatives Researchers are devising creative ways to get together as Trump’s policies curb travel to US gatherings.

Attendance at US-based science conferences is bouncing around this year but generally down. #AGU25 has ~10k fewer this year! I explored these trends for @nature.com — including solutions to keep conferences local & productive:

The length of the day in Helsinki is just under 6 hours, with sunrise at 9:15. It has been a very grey and cloudy December this year.

For context: The DPS has a subcommittee that has for years told the DPS committee to book only geographically central locations for conferences. It saves flight emissions and is more accessible physically and financially. So, where do they decide to book? Hawaii 🤦‍♀️

When looking for relief for climate crisis anxiety, you'd really hope that at least professional scientific societies like the Division for Planetary Sciences of @aas.org would make climate-responsible decisions, right? They understand the science, and act based on it, right...? Apparently not 🫠

The Minor Planet Center confirmed it as a comet, and named it 3I/ATLAS after the survey telescope that found it. The orbit information will be refined as more observations are made in the next months.

The Minor Planet Center has designated 3I/ATLAS = C/2025 N1 (ATLAS), or informally "Comet ATLAS", a new interstellar comet that is currently about 4.5 AU from the Sun and screaming through the solar system at 58 km/s (130000 mph)

The third interstellar minor planet? 😯 At its closest, it will pass just outside the orbit of Mars in October. Looking forward it!

The election result was a bliss to watch with the national political support taking a leap to the left. The far-right party lost about one half of their support, and the moderate right less but still lost mayorships in some cities. Hoping for this trend to hold until the parliamentary election. 💪🤞

Of course, you also have to be an adult (18 or older) and legally in the country. Nevertheless, it's a sign of good democracy to not restrict the municipal decision-making only to the citizens of the country when it concerns a larger number of people.
