5/ I’ll get there eventually. With this one, I think I finally got close.

It took over three years for this essay to find a home (a reminder that publishing has no true timeline) and I’m so thrilled it finally found the perfect one 🩶🤍🖤

4/ I printed it out & cut it up and kept & color coded its sections & moved them around and started all over again, looking for its structure and story. I used Les Calanques by Melissa Febos as my beacon - a guide towards the kind of essay I wanted to be able to write someday.

3/ In January 2022, I started submitting it to lit mags. Since then, it was rejected by almost 50 different places, to the point that I wondered if it would eventually end up in a back drawer file on my computer, an exercise in writing meant only for me. Still, I kept working on it.

2/ I wrote this essay in the Fall of 2021, thanks to the urging and support of Sarah Sentilles. It’s a time capsule- a version of me I no longer recognize. It’s also the most vulnerable and true thing I’ve ever written.
