67 years ago today the Busby Babes played their last game on British soil. It was a famous 5-4 victory over Arsenal at Highbury. My dad was there and the wonderful Patrick Barclay interviewed him about that game a few years ago. Here it is:

Rashford: sad it ended badly. Local lad who made it. Scored/made goals, won trophies. Should be a terrace hero but recency bias strong. Sauntered around the pitch when team needed leaders. Outside noise / pressure not helped but much was self inflicted. Thanks for memories #mufc

Amad will rightly get the plaudits, but Zirkzee changed the game. Playing with his back to goal he held the ball up, brought others into play and allowed United to retain possession in the attacking third. Stark contrast to Hojlund who now needs to sit on the bench. #mufc

13 years ago we lost my cousin John 'Kilburn' Mettis. Kilburn was a very well known Cockney Red and a major reason why I'm a red. Sadly missed. Much loved. Always remembered. RIP John. 🔴⚪️⚫️

Brilliant performance given the context of current form and recent Anfield displays.

The foundation for that performance was the Ugarte - Mainoo - Bruno midfield.

Amorim priorities must be a GK, a left footed human and an experienced striker.

Beautiful. Will look forward to listening to the eloquent mocking, with a predictable smattering of relevant expletives, from @sturdyalex.bsky.social 😊

Braverman tells us she has SEEN the wall Italy has built on their "land border" with Turkey. Thick, incompetent or both? Will surely be picked up by @quietriotpod.bsky.social @therestpolitics.bsky.social @thenewsagents.com @thetrawl.bsky.social

Years and years of bad recruitment has caught up with #mufc. I wanted EtH to stay in the summer but in hindsight, it was a bad move. This is his squad and it's not good. Amorim is right, it will get worse before getting better. Lucky there might be 3 worse teams in the league eh!

...United badly missed Ugarte and Fernandes. Add Mainoo and they would've competed in midfield last night but there are big issues elsewhere. Conceding two goals IN THE SIX YARD BOX! Zero awareness from Onana and a lack of intensity from Maguire and Martinez.

...Sitting in the South Stand I was watching and comparing Isak and Højlund in the first half.
One wanted the ball, looked for it and didn't stop moving. Came short, went long, had a killer first touch and was ruthless. The other one was Hojlund.

...Dalot, Onana are prime example. Even Amad is culpable. Fall his talent, his decision making is poor. Same with Garnacho.

Zirkzee again showed he is not for this level. Højlund not much better either. £100m+ for two centre forwards who don't even threaten to score.

Is it the system? Yes and no. It's a system that doesn't fit the players at Amorim's disposal. Why? Lots of reasons but mainly United's players are simply not good enough to adapt. United have players whose game intelligence is poor & football IQ that is sub-par.

It's a Christmas tradition so I was at the game yesterday. A horrible watch and for long periods in the first half it was very negative in the stands.

Newcastle were excellent. Their midfield bullied and outclassed Casemiro and Eriksen. Where do #mufc go from here? 🧵

Just this match, count how many times he has lost the ball. Back to goal, running on to it or ball to feet. He's not good enough.

I'm not sure Højlund is going to make it at United. Hold up play is hit and miss. Perpetually runs straight looking for a straight pass. Him and Zirkzee cost £100m+. Anthony fee (rightly) held up as poor judgement, but these two deals may not be far behind. #mufc

Their reaction is now all important. Let's see how it plays out.

1 year ago 1 0 0 0

Given Amorim's reaction to being questioned about Garnacho and Rashford it is now up to both players. If the decision leads to a positive reaction then it's good for the team. If their reaction is negative, then they will be sold. Amorim and the team win in both scenarios.

Wow. Had to enact the 'block' for the first time on here because someone who doesn't like 'lefties' had a go and included my son in his pointless reply.

Arsenal also look weaker on their left too. Difference is Kiwior and Zinchenko have the high-five merchant to deal with.

Both United's and Arsenal's left side not ideal. United missing Martinez with Maguire and Malacia in to contend with Saka 😫😫
Arsenal also look weaker with Kiwior and Zinchenko but they only have the high-five merchant to deal with. Advantage Arsenal 🥲

Received the 'Icons' edition of @thesefootballtimes.shoptoday. Beautiful descriptions of these legends of the beautiful game. Delighted Zico made the cut.
I'm assuming there will be an version 2.0? Where's Robson? Zanetti? Gento? Baresi? Del Piero? Zlatan?
