This also marks the 20th anniversary of meeting one of my best friends ever in Scott McCord. The scholarship gave me a part-time job and I showed up to a V for vendetta movie screening pemiere. Scott spotted me wearing a DFA shirt and he was like who the fuck are you? New coworker?Let's be friends.

We watched Depeche Mode for three songs & then started walking backwards towards the Sahara tent b/c giving up seeing Depeche Mode was sacrilege but we had to take the bet that DP was gonna be insane. I still remember turning my back on Depeche Mode. 13 years later, I finally saw them proper.

Depeche Mode was headlining the main stage and in 2006, I had been waiting nearly 20 years to see them live. But I knew I had to be close for Daft Punk. The joke was that even if they showed up in white shirts and blue jeans and pressed play on a CD player, it would still be worth it.

I would end up seeing 3 future headliners that weekend. AnCo and Phoenix both played in the middle of the afternoon. YYYs would later play the first Coachella I would ever take Buupy to. We still yell out Karen O's FRIDAY NITE spazz ad-lib to each other.

Here is the final lineup. The list of acts I saw are as follows: Daft Punk, Depeche Mode, Sigur Ros, TV on the Radio, animal collective, the walkmen, the Juan McLean, audio bullys. The next day, I saw Tool, Massive Attack, YYYs, Bloc Party, Gnarls Barkley, Phoenix, The Go! Team, Art Brut, The Dears.

Daft Punk wasn't even on the bill when it was announced in January 2005. They were added about a month later. Two days before the event, Kanye West and A-Trak were added to the bill. I hadn't been in America for over five years since this. The last time I was, it was the summer before 9/11.

I had gotten into broadcasting school in the fall of 2005, and in my 2nd semester, I won a scholarship which gave me a few grand at the beginning of each semester. The first cheque I got was in February 2006. One of my best friends, Ron, was already going to Coachella again, & this time I wanted in.

I was freshly arranged married after a few traumatic years. I knew I had made a mistake but my depression and lack of confidence stopped me from having a much different life, which in hindsight, was a good thing. I was still going to bars, doing drugs, & basically not getting therapy which I needed.

In less than a month, it'll be the 20th anniversary of the first ever Daft Punk pyramid show. I will create this thread and share memories of my experience leading up to it.

Tom Jones & EMF - Unbelievable (Tom Jones: The Right Time Episode 1, 1992) YouTube video by Tom Jones

Me and my brother in law vibing off this 1992 collab with EMF AND TOM JONES and during the final verse, James from EMF starts laughing at Tom Jones' ad-libs. The kids in the crowd, the live performance, everything about this clip is magic.
