On April 16, 2017, Easter Sunday, Robert Godwin Sr. — the father of Brady VP Brenda Joiner — was shot and killed while out for a walk in a heinous, random attack that was broadcast online.

Today, we remember Robert Godwin Sr. and honor his life, while holding Brenda and her family in our thoughts.

19 years ago today, 32 people were killed, and 17 people were injured when a gunman opened fire at Virginia Tech.

It remains one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history.

We must continue to fight for life-saving solutions to keep young people safe and prevent future tragedies.

I’m holding 32 fellow Hokies who should be here and their families in my heart today.

I promised myself that day that I would spend my time on earth making sure this never happens to another campus, another community, another family.

Let’s all act on that same promise.

My heart is broken at the loss of Cerina Fairfax, and devastated for her two children.

Cerina’s life mattered. And we will not stop fighting until women no longer have to fear dangerous partners or weapons in their home.
