Today I spotted a group of (I believe) cruise ship passengers cycling around downtown. It was great to see! I hope better bike lanes are built so that this becomes a regular occurrence for visitors.

I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.
certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.
Construction hazard in the Windsor St. bike lane just past Young St.
Also: good luck getting to the bus stop because the sidewalk is also blocked from one direction!
Halifax Examiner add is shown above the window near the front of an accordion bus (Number 1).
At long last, I have spotted one of the elusive @halifaxexaminer.ca adds on the Number 1 towards Mumford Terminal! #ExaminerBus
I mask up on transit to protect others/myself. Today, when crossing the street to transfer between busses, a man driving a large, polluting commercial vehicle thought it appropriate to verbally harass me. Without irony, in the heavy traffic he quipped; “that fresh air, eh?” Stop commenting on women!
Water sprinklers in front of an apartment building in Halifax.
We have been asked to conserve water (voluntarily), but some buildings still haven’t gotten the message.
This is the same spot a few days before the repair (photo taken from the opposite end). Water doesn’t ever pool here, so I am a bit baffled.
I’m not sure what the intent is. I know I will have to be more careful not to break and ankle at night or when snow disguises the surface. Still unclear why we can’t have a sidewalk here.
Wow. So much more accessible now that this 2m trough has been added next to the bike lane on Bedford Hwy. 🫠
Wee typo: should be 2015!
In 2025 the city of Daegu, South Korea, started a program to subsidize 75% of the cost of mini solar panels for apartments and single-family homes. Aimed to get 10,000 installed on balconies, but only 2,500 were implemented due to concerns about aesthetics, safety, etc. www.yna.co.kr/view/AKR2021...
We are on scene at an uncontrolled wildfire in the Susie Lake area of Bayers Lake. Residents are advised to stay clear of Bayer’s Lake area. Multiple road closures are in effect.
Please follow @hfxgov.bsky.social as further updates will be sent from the city's main account.
I was told they held off on repairs for years in anticipation of implementing the Functional Plan—meanwhile road conditions deteriorated. The current construction is to address these conditions. I would have preferred they just went ahead and implemented the planned changes. Would save $ too!
Yes, the Bedford Highway Functional Plan does have those features! I’ve been told construction won’t start until the Windsor Street Exchange is completed though. You would think they would want those up and running so locals can safely access the ferry…
It irks me that local politicians think this single ferry will solve all the congestion on the Bedford Highway. We also need BRT and bike lanes. Also, not everyone is trying to travel to downtown!
Nonetheless, upsetting that this is delayed.
Bedford Highway towards Halifax. An ebike rides to the right of the bike lane while a person stands waiting for the bus at a nearby stop. A sidewalk with a telephone pole in the middle ends suddenly after a driveway. The bike lane is sandwiched between two car lanes.
It seems to me space for an accessible sidewalk and cycle track exists along significant portions of the Bedford Highway, but Council has been slow to implement the Bedford Highway Functional Plan which would be a significant step toward multi-modal transportation along this corridor.
I will add that a lot of school activities (sports, student gov) require kids to arrived early or stay late. Kids that rely on the school bus therefore can’t always participate. Would be great if kids living on the Bedford Highway could safely bike to Halifax West, for example.
This is because the bike lanes were painted where people had always walked and there is no other space to walk.
A bike commute to the peninsula would be considerably shorter than the bus, and a bit shorter than by car. But currently it is not safe because the infrastructure is just paint (which fades yearly), the lanes a filled with debris, and they disappear in some sections. I would like a cycle track.
There is all sorts of interesting information in the recent bike lane decision out of Ontario.
63% of staff at Sinai Health (a major hospital in downtown Toronto) cycle to work (2017 survey)!!!
Just imagine if that were possible for staff & patients here in Halifax.

Sapling inside a large black planter at the bus stop.
On a whim (Brunswick St sidewalk now connects to the waterfront) I checked out the new (partially constructed) Granville Park today. This space is going to be so nice—much better than the highway ramps that formerly occupied the space.
I am wondering how viable the giant tree planters are, however.

Finally got to ride one of the new electric buses!
An approximately 2m length of sidewalk with curb cuts and tactile paving on opposite sides sits along the Bedford Highway. In one direction, the curb cut leads to a sloped gravel shoulder along the Bedford Highway instead of the sidewalk continuing.
This is a newly installed sidewalk bit along the Bedford Highway. Is it accessible?
Curb cuts? Check.
Tactile paving? Check.
And yet, the sidewalk ends here instead of continuing in front of the new apartment building. So, not really all that accessible, is it?
Stickers of various vehicles (cars, trucks, cement mixers, etc.) are stuck in a jumble on a bus shelter with “Welcome to Halifax” written in black Sharpie above. A small “no pedestrians” sign sits next to the wording.
At the bus stop this morning.
They don’t even have a painted line for the inside of the bike path along this stretch. Drivers pulling in and out if Fisherman’s market don’t understand there is a bike path there. In winter, snow is dumped into the path where the truck is parked—hence all the gravel there in spring.
What it’s like getting from the bus stop to the crosswalk along the Bedford Highway during re-construction of the bus shelter taken out by a car last year. @safehrm.bsky.social
I work on the peninsula. During rush hour, it often takes 45 minutes to catch a bus off the peninsula. To boot, the schedule is unreliable and the apps often are wrong or missing buses. Then I have to ride another 45 minutes. Getting out of the core of the city at rush hour should not be this hard.
