…and that, I would argue, is a prime example of how the politics of the Reconstruction era still inflect American politics today. Sorry, I probably could have said all that more clearly.
Their support for Mulford had distinctly racial overtones. My point is that when the NRA has had to choose between gun and white, they tend to go w the latter. Muted reaction to ICE shootings seems to be in keeping with that.
Short answer: 1. after we got rid of slavery we left too much of the antebellum power structure intact. 2. In 2010 we effectively deregulated campaign finance.
There’s other stuff, but mostly that ^^
The ultimate middle management skill is, when someone snippily asks you for information you’ve already given them, to calmly and politely provide the information to them again, without pointing out that they already had it and forgot.
This is a form of bureaucratic invincibility. For real.
1. The Aswan Dam
2. The Leaning Tower of Pisa
3. Chandigarh
4. The road closures for the 2025 Philadelphia Marathon
The AARP should host a punk/hardcore festival. I think it’s time.
I grew up in Delaware County and have lived the majority of my life in Philadelphia. Here is my impression of the HBO drama Task:
“Youse didn’t do the crime how I told youse to do the crime! Now I’m gonna kill youse! But first, microwave me a Steak-umms…wiz wit!”
See you again in 25 years.
In the meantime, listen to @meettheblackburns.bsky.social

Possibly the same people who respond to a 60 degree day in February with “If this climate change, bring it on!”
Remember that time they were going to build a basketball arena in Center City and it was going to be totally fine because SEPTA was totally going to up its game with Regional Rail and the Broad Street Line so people wouldn’t feel like they had to drive in?
Possible 2026 Kennedy Center honorees:
1. The guy who yelled “Don’t tase me, bro!” At John Kerry’s Secret Service detail
2. Big & Rich (of “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy”

Forget it Jake. It’s Chinatown.
Forget it Jake: It’s Chinatown.
Forget it Jake; it’s Chinatown.
Forget it Jake—it’s Chinatown.
Grief covers a lot of different genres: body horror, cosmic horror, indie family comedy-drama, auteur experimental…
When life gives you lemons, make a lemon cannon.
Egregious AI fail.
Theory: People who say "leap and the net appears" in social situations are the same people who say "we're going to build the plane while we fly it" in professional situations.
Different sentiments, united by weirdly cavalier attitudes toward gravity.
Oh yeah, alright, take it easy your holiness…
“Hip Priest” did pop into my mind when I read the news.
“American Pope” sounds like the name of a really weird ___ song.
Peter Medawar is a severely underrated thinker.
Wondering if “Reissue Label Dad” would have any viability as a lifestyle brand.
I interviewed Stephen West of the great “Philosophize This!” podcast.
I did so for Orange Blossom Ordinary, which does not have a Bluesky account. Good morning, @estice.bsky.social !
Actual question: What is with this collective need we apparently have to posthumously destroy Joan Didion’s life and work? It’s weird. The Didion/Babitz book was an embarrassment and this looks worse.
I’m not even a super fan (except for her Martha Stewart essay which, seriously, I’ll fight you).
At a community college, the programs that accept the most federal $ are the most workforce-oriented. So when you cut federal $ from a cc, the progs u end up shuttering are the ones that do direct job training.
Progs that get little if any federal $? History, Philosphy, etc.
Let that sink in.
Situation comedy, as opposed to all those comedies that just exist in a fathomless, silent void.
You can pry athleisure from my cold, dead hands.
