Aah, I remember running into that issue too. If I remember correctly, it just doesn't work on versions beyond 4.3 (I still use 4.5.4), so I had to experiment to find a workaround by having the blend mode on regular, turning off/on lights, and adjusting the opacity until it reached a similar result.
