Astrocytes form long-range gap-junction networks across the brain that can reorganize with experience, demonstrating that plasticity depends on these glial networks as well as on neurons! 🧪

Making Working Memory Work: The Multidisciplinary Neuroscience of Patricia Goldman-Rakic You’re a monkey, and somebody in a white lab coat has shown you a location where a delicious, ever-so-nummy, bit of banana has been placed, and then obscured your visual field. It is up to you, my goo...

Neuroscientist Patricia Goldman-Rakic would have been 89 years old today. Her work in the 1970s showed us on a molecular level how working memory functions through loop firing and local suppression. Sadly, she passed away in 2003 at just 66 years old.

Another solar generation record set today in Britain.

14,426 megawatts were being generated at 11.30 today, delivering 37% of GB’s electricity and contributing to a record low reliance on fossil fuels. Gas accounted for just 2% of electricity generation at that time.

What can the classic arcade game, Pac-Man, tell us about the brain?

SWC Seminar Speaker @tianmingyang.bsky.social, Chinese Academy of Sciences, showed that humans and macaques share a common 'language of problem-solving'.

Astrocytes connect specific brain regions through plastic networks - Nature Communication between distant brain regions is mediated by plastic networks of gap junction-coupled astrocytes.

Astrocytes do so much more than any of us thought - they even communicate among specific brain regions across hemispheres!

The journey to this paper spanned nearly a decade, but I'm most excited to see what everyone else does with the tools we've built. There's so much for all of us to explore!

Why are straight white men overrepresented in positions of power? | Steve Phillips When we wonder why marginalized groups are ‘underrepresented’, we are asking the wrong question

It can be hard to criticise white straight men (WSM). In my industry science/academia I have witnessed WSM excel, sadly I was in a dispute where the entire chain of command were WSM.
I am striving for gender equality & multiracial representation in the top tiers

Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon is a lethality-maxxing wasps’ nest America’s armed forces are supremely capable and roiled by infighting

Dance of the Charlatans. Since taking office last year Pete Hegseth has ousted at least 21 generals. “He’s a 12-year-old boy with a set of army action figures who likes to play war,” sighs one former military official, and he's obsessed with revenge for the fact that he was riffed as an Army major.
