Unfortunately, it’s also being used to amplify disinformation. That said, we’re fine fighting fire with fire.

Researchers Secretly Ran a Massive, Unauthorized AI Persuasion Experiment on Reddit Users The researchers' bots generated identities as a sexual assault survivor, a trauma counselor, and a Black man opposed to Black Lives Matter.

A team of researchers quietly ran a large-scale experiment, seeding a popular subreddit with AI-powered bots to see if they could sway opinions on divisive topics. Spoiler: They did. The power of persuasion is being automated and #AI #Disinformation is effective.

We think part of the solution is verifying human/organization authenticity at the account level and defaulting non-authentic accounts out of algorithmic suggestions. This can be done while preserving anonymity and protecting marginalized groups, protecting free speech.

Trying to stop mis/disinformation at the content level is a losing battle—TTPs adapt too fast. We believe guaranteeing human authenticity at the account level (without sacrificing anonymity) and providing algorithmic choice are the big components of a solution. Both are possible, and it’s time.
