My Republican colleagues are turning a blind eye as the President escalates unhinged threats to obliterate an entire civilization. A moral failure and cowardice of the highest order.

Speaker Johnson must bring the House back to stop this blatantly illegal, immoral threat.

I’m in DC today, ready and able to vote to rein in this out-of-control war. Republicans control the Senate and the House – they need to have the courage to call us back into session and then vote to hold this President accountable.

I feel sick to my stomach waiting around to see what atrocity Trump has in mind for the people of Iran this evening. It's hard to fathom our other elected leaders aren't able to check him in any meaningful way. It's an indictment not just of voters but of our whole system. We're ruled by a mad king.

This is great and I think it applies broadly to many (all?) fields outside academia.

The U.S. Built a Blueprint to Avoid Civilian War Casualties. Trump Officials Scrapped It. The Pentagon dismantled its civilian protection mission as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made “lethality” a top priority and the Trump administration reorganized national security around two principl...

Had the Defense Department’s harm-reduction plan not been axed by the Trump administration, the policies almost certainly would’ve reduced the number of noncombatants harmed over the past year, current and former officials tell ProPublica.

Unfortunately, the drone edition of the BYD Leopard is not available for sale in Ukraine. They have to supply their own drones.

But no, we shouldn't send Cybertrucks pretending to help Ukraine.

If we want to help Ukraine, we should give them what they ask for: money, weapons, and respect.

Actually, Americans are just like you. ~20-30% of them genuinely support fascism, as in ~every 🇪🇺 country. You are just more fortunate to have political institutions & a multiparty system that prevent that 20-30% from fully capturing the center-right party, becoming 51%, & controlling the government.

After a series of fatal strikes involving civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, Congress directed the Pentagon to reduce civilian casualties as part of a 2019 law. During the Biden administration, the Defense Department created the Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response initiative.

The civilian mitigation teams – cut by 90% by Hegseth – work with military commanders on target planning, and making sure that targets are actually military sites. The teams help come up with "no strike" lists, including religious and cultural sites and schools

I knew that the Department of War shot a missile into a school & killed 175 civilians, mostly children.

This is learned today:

Secretary of War Hegseth had cut the teams assigned to prevent such tragedies by 90%.

This has nothing to do with fraud.

The agents Trump allegedly sent to investigate fraud are shooting protesters and arresting children. His DOJ is gutting the U.S. Attorney’s Office and crippling their ability to prosecute fraud. And every week Trump pardons another fraudster.

VA Gov. Spanberger (moderate, was in CIA) and NYC Mayor Mamdani (left, is in DSA) both taking steps to block local law enforcement from helping ICE as it violently violates people's rights is a good example of how the relevant divide in the Dem coalition isn't center-left, it's fight-don't fight.

How Not to Defeat Authoritarianism Moderation used to help Democrats win, but its advantages now have been greatly exaggerated.

Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Minneapolis (Official Audio)
Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Minneapolis (Official Audio) YouTube video by Bruce Springsteen

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Naming someone is not doxxing. They aren’t undercover. They aren’t intelligence agents overseas. This is outrageous - we are supposed to be a free Republic and these people want an authoritarian police state. Lawsuits should be filed & ranking Dems in Congress should act.

Cops are taught not to shoot into cars. ICE keeps doing it anyway. Immigration agents have shot at least 9 people since September. All of them have been in cars.

Cops are taught to avoid shooting into cars, for all the obvious reasons, but ICE has shot NINE people in cars since September. Great reporting from @nlanard.bsky.social www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

a cartoon character is jumping in the air while holding a sword in his hand . Alt: a clip from the film Nausicaa of the title character jumping off her cloud climber and throwing off her mask in excitement

Nausicaa was so unlike anything I had seen at the time as a kid in the 80s... completely opened my eyes to new art, storytelling, ways of thinking about the world and the future.

Who controls both Houses of Congress?

Stop giving them free passes. You're angry at Lisa Murkowski & Susan Collins & Thom Tillis & other the 10 other Republicans who could caucus immediately, today, w/ the Democrats & actually given them control of both the House & Senate.

Im seeing discussions about consultations with congress, authorizations of force etc. I have to say this transcends any of what I would call sub constitutional technicalities. The president has gone to war with a foreign power and, it seems, kidnapped a foreign head of state on the basis of nothing.

Kidnapping the leader of a foreign state without any declaration of war and announcing it via social media is full-on rogue state stuff. From the world’s number one superpower.

Among the many reasons you don’t kidnap a foreign head of state at gunpoint even if you have the capability, is that it sparks consequences you can neither control nor anticipate.

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

The two parties are not remotely the same, & yet they are covered in our most prominent outlets in exactly opposite proportions to the actual degree of scandal, lawbreaking, authoritarianism, etc. It has been uneven for decades, but it’s reached new levels of farce & obscenity since Trump.
