The 2026 #AI index report notes that the energy consumption for only 4 prompts is comparable to charging 2 smartphones. Avoiding AI‑generated summaries reduces #environmental footprint. To search #Google WITHOUT AI Overview add "-ai" to your search query. I learned this from @Adela V. Justice.

If nothing, state-level regulation could stop AI companies from taking advantage of local vulnerabilities (e.g., affordable land and energy prices) and prevent them from benefitting from regulatory loopholes, thereby reducing the risk of a race to the bottom in oversight and enforcement."

This is dehumanizing and normalizes a future when AI agents can literally boss humans around; with or without our awareness. Its the latter I'm more scared of! @jennaahart.bsky.social has a good piece on it: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Regardless of your political views or perspectives on the region, this is a moment when simple acts of compassion, such as brief messages of support or offers of collaboration with colleagues based in Iran, can make a meaningful difference. hashtag#science_diplomacy.

Iranians are experiencing a collective trauma. Thousands have been killed/injured in recent events, the economy is crippled & the threat of a wider conflict is real. This is especially difficult for those living in Iran, as many have lost (or fear losing) loved ones. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Mohammad Hosseini and Kristi Holmes: After 3 years of ChatGPT, it’s clear Illinois needs more AI safeguards There is a lack of federal AI regulation to build more safeguards, so states such as Illinois must pass their own bills.

When discussing the impacts of the US government shutdown on science, the #peer_review & editorial work done by federal scientists & staff is overlooked. Their absence is a halt in engagement with sharp minds. I miss their presence at @accountabilityair.bsky.social & look forward to their return.

I submitted a paper to a Wiley journal recently (accepted with minor revisions). When resubmitting, the platform forces me to accept a new term before proceeding, to allow the publisher to use my paper to train their #AI. This is NOT real #consent nor a fair contractual term. #publication_ethics

Really enjoyed attending ENRIO conference. I raised the issue that 'RCR trainings do not necessarily improve openness of science,' partly because most of the work a researcher must do to open up science is ultimately work they do for free for others #open_science
