A group of Ecuadorian fishermen survived a US drone strike, were detained at gunpoint, phones wiped, ship blown up, disappeared to El Salvador, then released without charge. “They knew we were fishermen. Even the Salvadorian authorities said things had been handled very badly.”
I first started this reporting in Aug., when a colleague connected me with a dairy worker. He shared that his boss gathered all the workers & said if anyone tried to take legal action against him, he’d make sure they ended up in Tijuana.
so I started asking around --

People in wheelchairs surrounded and barricaded two city buses over the course of two days, demanding wheelchair lifts and chanting, "We will ride."
I could be wrong, but it does feel like having Hochman - who was willing to slap Lil AD with a felony gang strike for the privilege of being shoved and beaten by the officers he was trying to deescalate - in office is helping greenlight this too.
And last July, they assaulted mourners @ a candlelight vigil at Crenshaw & Hyde Park, shoving, beating & eventually arresting a well-known peacekeeper & another man & hitting *them* w/ felony charges, despite LAPD's assaults on the men having been caught on tape. la.streetsblog.org/2025/12/18/t...
In Jan. in Watts, LAPD aggressively antagonized mourners paying respects to Mama Curtis - pulling out tasers & batons, detaining ppl pushing them around, and putting up yellow tape "like it was a crime scene" DESPITE having been advised about the repass in advance.

Aggressive crackdowns on people of color gathering in community seems to be a hallmark of McDonnell's tenure. This time, LAPD harassed formerly incarcerated youth who were just about to graduate from a reentry prog. in Boyle Heights. Their ceremony had to be canceled. thelalocal.org/neighborhood...

The funeral procession for Hussle was a day unlike anything L.A. had ever seen before or since. It honored Hussle's concept of the Marathon, winding 26 miles thru South Central, allowing mourners from every set & section to come together & be part of his legacy. la.streetsblog.org/2019/04/12/s...

Not sure what I was hoping for from the NYT's look into Bovino's last days, but seeing his racism & fascism treated like it was part of an "unapologetic" persona he wore - e.g. "He relished politically incorrect language." - was definitely not it? www.nytimes.com/2026/03/24/u...

BREAKING: California lawmakers say they'll change the name of César Chavez Day to Farmworkers Day following sexual abuse allegations.
Dolores Huerta's statement on Cesar Chavez: “I am nearly 96 years old, and for the last 60 years have kept a secret because I believed that exposing the truth would hurt the farmworker movement I have spent my entire life fighting for... I can no longer stay silent and must share my own experiences"
NEW: California DAs have charged nearly 20,000 people with drug possession *felonies* under Prop 36, a new tough-on-crime law.
Despite promises for "mass treatment," only 57 of those people have successfully gone into treatment + had their cases dismissed in the first year. Others face prison time.

LA’s Crenshaw and Slauson to Forever be Known as ‘Nipsey Hussle Square’
“Age fourteen on up, my whole life took place on these four corners…This really was my foundation,” Hussle told Current TV back in 2010. Now renamed in his honor, those corners pay tribute to how he transformed them.
I’m back in court this morning for the arraignment of Bennett and Dontreal Washington, who LAPD punched in the face and claimed was a member of the Rollin 60s.
DHS claimed "an ICE agent had fired 'defensive shots' into Martinez's vehicle after Martinez 'intentionally ran over' another agent."
But body cam video now "shows that Martinez's vehicle, a blue Ford Fusion, was stationary or going at a very low rate of speed when he was fatally shot."
