Correction: just heard that the 2024 ATUS will be released in August! Exciting!

As always, reach out if you have trouble accessing the paper.
Importantly, the Leave Module was last conducted in 2017/18, before many new state leave policies came into effect. Release of a new module has been delayed by the administration, leaving researchers without the data we need to assess how well these policies are reaching older workers today.
I'm grateful for the support, funding, and guidance of the @uwrdrc.bsky.social and @irpwisc.bsky.social.
Our findings suggest that access to paid leave declines with age, and that shifts to part-time work may play a role in declining access. To meet the needs of an aging workforce, policymakers should ensure that access to paid leave policies extends to part-time workers.
Closing out the week: new paper with @arash-p.bsky.social in @agingpolicy.bsky.social: Access and Unmet Need for Paid Leave Among Older Workers. We use data from the ATUS Leave Module to examine access and unmet need for paid leave among employed adults aged 55–70.
This is a great action to take, today and every day. Trans friends of all ages: my life would not be the same without you.
I'm extremely honored to have been awarded an
@upjohninstitute.bsky.social 2026 Early Career Research Award to study the impacts of paid sick leave mandates on the employment and economic security of older workers.
New Yorkers deserve solutions that meaningfully address hate violence — not political theater & half-measures.
Instead of voting to pass unserious & anti-democratic “buffer zone” bills, @council.nyc.gov should invest $26-30 million in evidence-based non-carceral hate violence prevention. Read why:
Also really excited for this open data art show: so many ways to learn and create! bricartsmedia.org/exhibition/b...
We collect tons of data with public funds, and it's often under-leveraged because of limited internal capacity to fully analyze it and sharing restrictions. We could be learning so much more if more datasets were made publicly available. Open data is a huge opportunity to maximize these investments.
It's a dream come true to have contributed to a public good, where new researchers can learn from our data outside of the initial intended report/purpose.
Getting excited for NYC Open Data Week! In 2016, I wrote "data set will be publicly available" into a grant application, and this year got an email that the dataset is being used by Barnard students. On Monday they'll present their results! csc.barnard.edu/events/new-y...
Saw And Juliet... with two 11 year olds and a 9 year old. They all loved it, and it was a cheaper ticket than the other shows I'd recommend (Lion King, Wicked). But less fun for the adults. My kid also loved Operation Mincemeat - which I 100% recommend!
NY's TDI program's insufficient, outdated funding creates huge inconsistencies with the paid family leave program. If you need it for yourself you get $170/week, but if your family member has the same injury or condition you can receive >$1200/week. It's long past time to reconcile these policies.
Good timing for thr snow day: NYC expands paid sick leave coverage.
As of yesterday, NYC workers have stronger paid sick time rights!
Now, the city's law covers paid sick time for childcare, emergency-related closures, housing- and benefits-related legal proceedings, workplace violence, and more. Learn more: www.abetterbalance.org/local-victor...

A collage of 49 books/novels I read in 2025.
This year was not my best for reading - it seemed like there were sometimes months between things I really liked, but definitely some great ones in the mix.

Our paper reflecting on 30 years of Medicaid estate recovery is fully out today! We shed light on policy mechanisms, state variation, and its potential to drive wealth disparities. Thank you to @jhppl.bsky.social for being the perfect home for our work on this understudied, but longstanding, policy.
Three of them, in a trench coat.
Robin Hood - but for journal articles.
This is something my students bring up a lot: really excited to see (and use) the final version).
Extremely excited to see the Breul Prize awarded to this excellent paper about what comes next after the Fight for $15! Congrats to Kess and everybody involved!
