It totally depends on what arrangement LMM made with the rights co. He might only get the royalties but not jurisdiction over the rights.

I booked plays and musicals for my school and locally for years. There's so much fine print that goes into rights etc. Many go ignored. Not professionally tho

The rights company would have something in the contract to the effect of identifying EVERY role that should not be white. For ex., in Hairspray, it states that the role of Edna Turnblad [the mother] MUST be played by a male. Or that the nuns in NUNSENSE must be female. [Alt. NUNSENSE A-Men = male]
