I think theres just a lot of struggles when it comes to translating something like mario to a movie and expecting things that'd work fine in a game to be well received when put into film.

With how modern game development works, when you're making a sidescroller now, you're not really pushing any hardware limits or anything. Artists are moreso concerned about making convincing worlds (which is good too!)
