Volunteering is not unethical. It's not exploitation to willingly give your labour and your love to something that gives you back all of it and more - connection, celebration, opportunities, a platform, created by you, for you. We need to reexamine this idea, this fear, that every time we do something for free, it means we've been robbed, and every time we ask someone to do something, it's manipulation. I know how it feels to be in this position, but it's killing our communities. It's killing our relationships. We are not businesses, we are people, and the things we want to give and receive are numerous.

I hope we can change how we view this, because if we can only get things done with money, we let the people with capital dictate everything that happens.

Meanjin's 'financial' shutdown doesn't add up

Opinion | Melbourne University Press says it shut down Meanjin for "purely financial reasons". Perhaps the university could have used some of its $273 million surplus to safeguard the seminal journal, @catrionamp.bsky.social‬ writes.

Targeting journalists is a war crime.
As colleagues, we remember them.

‘Does Gen Z really prefer Discord watch parties while wearing pyjamas and getting turnt at frozen-yoghurt shops instead? It would be reductive
to flatten an entire generation into a single, generalised wet blanket, and it’s certainly misleading to discuss
‘the nightclub’ as a monolith. If clubs have anything going for them, it’s that they’ve always been on the pulse of changing tastes and times.’

shout out to Series Mania in 2019 when they said they "didn't do comedy because they want to tell important cultural stories" as though the two were mutually exclusive

every australian tv development process ever

The ABC spent millions defending this Lattouf case. The Creative Australia chair resigned. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra had its worst financial result in a long time. The SLV and SLQ are still dealing with the fallout from their cowardice.
It doesn't pay to betray your own principles and values.

Should we take care of each other?

To me, this is the central question underpinning pretty much every current major sociopolitical issue.

About 12 years ago I loaned Geoffrey Rush some change to use a payphone in Carlton one night, think his wife had kicked him out. Also while working at Boost Juice I sold Lady Gaga a smoothie. She was visiting a radio station nearby to promote Just Dance.

one of my best friends over drinks the other night spent an hour telling me the detailed plot of 2 (fanfic) episodes of Supernatural she is writing. I do not know anything about this show but she cared about it so much that I didn't wanna stop listening. that's love baby

Main character energy is OUT, this summer we’re bringing NPC energy. We’re posted up at the bar dropping lore and suggesting side quests. We’re leaning casually near a locked door and saying “I don’t think you have the key for that” when someone tries the handle. We’re staring at a tree.
