My plugin stands in opposition to the smoke, mirrors, and theatre that is marketed towards people who know they need security but don't understand it. It isn't for everyone and it won't solve all of your problems, but it will give you a leg up.

So I decided to make my own Wordpress plugin called Hard Boiled Security. It's incredibly lightweight, has zero configuration, and bundles my approach to Wordpress security. I haven't had a single client get hacked over the last ten years.

As someone who's been in the marketing industry for 15 years, I despise these tactics. Annoying people until they purchase is such a shit tactic. Not because it doesn't work, but because it's a shitty thing to do.

You can download popular wordpress security plugins for free from the official directory, but to get the main features or stop the intrusive advertising, you must pay for a license.

Wordpress Security is its own distinct economy full of excellent marketing and a lot of theatre, where the most popular security plugins run on a freemium model.

And above all else, use a randomly generated password, like the ones Wordpress suggests for you these days, and don't use it for anything else. Use a password manager (not your browser) so you don't have to remember it yourself.

Access to XMLRPC can be either blocked by your server, a lightweight plugin singular purpose plugin called Disable XML-RPC” by Philip Erb, or by adding the code directly to your website.

XMLRPC is a relic from the beginnings of Wordpress, which allowed publishing from desktop apps, which was the style at the time. It also powers the pingbacks and trackbacks that you're probably getting spammed with.

The bigger risk is XMLRPC, which is still accessible and exploitable even with the login url changed and completely bypasses two-factor authentication plugins.

I've been seeing a lot of posts talking about the best practices to keep Wordpress websites more secure. Most of the advice is solid but changing the login url may have unintended consequences and still leave you vulnerable.
