Because, well, she knew whose embrace she was in. That was not Steve’s arm. This was either a very nice dream or some sort of torturous waking nightmare… one where she has to get out of the woman she’s fallen in love with’s embrace without making it super awkward for the both of them. She didn’t love her odds of success relying on her own grace and was pretty sure she wasn’t dreaming.

Gently, mindful of Eddie’s wounds, Steve pressed a soft kiss to Eddie’s lips.

Their first.

Eddie only wished he could kiss him back like he wanted to.

“Get better. There’s more where that came from.” Steve promised.

“Consider me motivated.”

“Nah.” Steve laughed softly. “I like you. And I thought I’d lost you before I could even tell you. Won’t make that mistake again.”

“Must be dreaming. You like me back? ’s a good dream.”

Steve’s whole face lit up. “Back?” His eyes drifted to Eddie’s lips. “Can I?”

“Please.”

“Regular prince charming you are. Shoulda kissed me. Might have woke up sleeping beauty sooner.” Eddie wanted to gesture to himself but didn’t have the strength yet.

Steve pondered that. “I’d do it you know.”

“I have a concussion?”

The soft look that Steve gave was going to be Eddie’s true end. No way he’d be able to keep his feelings in check. He’d thought Steve was handsome before he found out he was also a great guy.

Did he carry him out bridal style too? Jesus. Christ.

“How—“ Eddie winced, the word ripping through his dry throat like a razor.

Steve rushed to grab water, bringing a straw to Eddie’s lips. He sucked it down gratefully.

“Easy.” Steve cooed.

“How long?” Eddie rasped.

“8 days.”

“How’d I get here?”

Steve shrugged. “I might have carried you out.”

His gaze shifted to see Steve’s head lift from the bed. He’d fallen asleep leaned over in a chair. Their eyes locked. Steve’s widened causing Eddie’s mouth to curve into a sleepy smile.

“EDDIE!” Steve stood so fast the chair scraped the floor. “You’re awake!”

Eyes blinked open to see cream walls, a curtain, a tray and monitor. His last memory was bleeding in the Upside Down, thinking it was his end. Those beeps of his own heart’s rhythm combined with the pain he was currently experiencing suggested otherwise.

Something stirred to Eddie’s right.

For the steddiemicrofic challenge over on Tumblr the prompt was 'first' and the word count requirement was 336. Since it's so short I figured I'd just post it here too.

The steady rhythm reached Eddie’s ears as he returned to consciousness.

So the Steddie fic in my head is going to have to be written. Season 5 has only served to inspire me to write it more. I want to see how the finale goes so I can see what all we’re working with in canon, but so far it’s looking like it will be starting in S5 and continuing after it.
