Shoreface nourishment , the underwater application of sand to combat coastal erosion, is one of the measures used to protect vulnerable coastal areas.

Despite years of field measurements, laboratory experiments, and model studies, the effect of shoreface nourishment remains difficult to predict and more knowledge is needed. A new study identified 4 important knowledge gaps.

1. Sand distribution: It’s still unclear how the deposited sand spreads through the coastal zone. 2. Design variables: Little is known about the effect of design variables such as volume, location, and grain size on the lifespan and effectiveness of replenishments. 3. Cumulative effect: The long-term effect of repeated replenishments on a scale of tens of kilometres and decades is largely unknown. 4. Limitations of calculation models: Existing numerical models cannot yet reliably predict the complete morphological development.

Despite years of field measurements, laboratory experiments and model studies, the effect of shoreface nourishment is still difficult to predict and more knowledge is needed. Researchers have come to this conclusion in a new study.
