High Court throws out Victoria's $5,000 cap on political donations Victoria's political donation and disclosure laws have been scrapped by the High Court just seven months out from the state's upcoming election.

Sounds like the Liberals and Greens would both support acting quickly www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04...

I suspect the primary beneficiaries of this decision will actually be the Coalition & One Nation, not independents, as it invalidates the entire section that covers donation caps in general so now allows big donations from corporations & the wealthy who want a change in govt #springst #auspol

You would hope that Labor + Greens + Legalise Cannabis would support that to get it through quickly so there’s no gaps but would the crossbench do that instead of also pushing for other changes too?

Before you jump on the “punish the big parties” bandwagon, beware you are promoting the “keep big money in politics” bandwagon.

Its important to note that the HCA found the offending sections could not be severed in any way, so they invalidated *the entirety* of Part 12 of Electoral Act 2002 (Vic), which contains the bulk of laws around expenditure and donations

From recollection, the South Australian donations laws also have nominated entities provisions so you’d assume a challenge is likely to those laws too

High Court holds that the Victorian donations law is invalid due to it improperly burdening the implied right to freedom of political communication

Challenged concerned the law's operations *with* the nominated entities exemption, which benefited political parties

Politics has always had that tribal identity where it’s about being an entertaining contest aspect to it, if anything it exists far less now than in the past though the attention economy has meant many have had to lean back into it

I suspect the EU FTA may also massively reduce the number of European working holiday visa holders who do farm work if it eliminates work requirements like what happened for the UK
