Philip Bump: How recent is America's past? Things that Americans think of as having long ago were, in fact, within the lifespans of most of us.

The thing about Palantir’s cultural chauvinism is also the thing about the anti-woke rejection of the effects of explicit racism. In each case, the victors often cheated — and not even a lifetime ago.

I think direct control is pretty much on a leash, folks. I've had dogs think they should chase them a coyote...

Or maybe help them go to the country of their choice. I wouldn't want to come back to the US after being treated like this

Nettles, miner's lettuce, chanterelles, ramps, etc all sell for $$$. Good thing they aren't more popular...

A messy mass of miner's lettuce fills the frame. The rounded spoon shaped leaves are pretty much hidden by the abundant painters palette shaped, green and fleshy bracts showcasing a cluster of about 5 or so tiny white flowers and flower buds at the center. The flowers are star shaped with 5 petals.

This plant is edible as a salad green. If you forage, you should pick it as far off trail as possible.

What is this? A fine salad green!
Miner's lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) is really going to town! It is very tasty when freshly picked.

A mallard duck floats at the center of a still pond, sending out ripples that expand in ever-widening circles across the water. The surface reflects trees in shimmering gold and green, their shapes bending and wavering as the concentric rings gently distort the mirrored scene.

Have a look at spring growth We are all paying attention to the glory of spring flowers like the pawpaw we looked at yesterday, or the amazing redbuds from last week.

We are all paying attention to spring trees, but flowers seem to get all the attention. Vegetative growth, as buds open and leaves enlarge, are doing complicated, interesting things, and they are certainly worth a close look.

"... scientists must explain complex environmental realities to... people whose livelihoods, identities, cultures, and futures are tied to forests. Climate change, invasive species, and land exploitation all coincide with... approaches that have deeply social, political, and economic implications."
