When my son was very small, he liked dolls, he played family with his stuffed toys AND his Thomas trains. I saw first hand how caring, kind, and sensitive he is and how society made him shut that away into a small place even though he has an involved dad who is just the same. This is so sad.

This is an important category that I completely missed:
Americans have saved/invented everything and therefore it's completely unnecessary for their citizens to know anything in perpetuity. Sub category of "I'd rather make a dick of myself than consider that I, an American, could get anything wrong"

Speaking as an American and a NZer, I agree there are individuals and political parties in NZ who have a similar arrogance to US exceptionalism. However the way the brainwashing works in the US is on another level. It transcends left/right and often left leaning Americans can't see it in themselves.

I think most banks don't have currency exchanging anymore, at least not around here

I've been trying to grow it in containers but I might try this in the garden instead. Thanks

I'm not happy about it but feel like less of a failure in this thread because it's the one herb I can't grow too!

The crucial thing to understand about Peter Thiel is that he adores "The Lord of the Rings" and no one in human history has ever so utterly completely missed all the salient points of what a book is about.

I don't read polls. I rely on traditional ways to know if a prime minister is embattled.

Oh yes, I've had that a few times before. I tell them not too long but take a lunch just in case.

It's become the thing to do in the US. So, as hard as it is that we've become a stop gap for lack of social services here, at least we're not dealing with the level of lawfare and censorship US librarians are facing...for now.

Oh dear, and I thought it was bad when my mom asked if we have turkeys in NZ

This guy is still not as bad as the mystery pooper who dropped one in the social zone and another customer told us there was a poop on the floor. We did hope it was a child but it was of substantial size so who really knows.

Those of us relegated to the cliff faces have it a bit rough but it's still nice to have all this space

A brown paper bag stands on the kitchen counter. You can just see two black ears, several white whiskers, and the very top of one very wide kitty eye poking out of the top of it.

I shouldn't be surprised. We had an American in the library angry we wouldn't allow him to sign up for a regular membership (we have a holiday borrower membership which he didn't want) and he threw a book at the librarian helping him and called her a Democrat. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Yes, exactly. In the beginning, we adopted US bsky elders as honorary NZers because they were so amused and sweet by how we all know each other on here. Now, it's a clear demonstration of how left or right, many Americans are soaked in the idea of their own are exceptionalism.
