It's cool to have premade things to prototype with. Better if you can open them up and look inside. But I'm also increasingly of the belief that, early stage learning, they can be traps.
Easy to just use, accept, forget, move on ➡️ Lost chance for curiosity and truly making it your own.
Lotsa good experiences introducing kids to pico-8 here as well.
I honestly love that it doesn't come with too many functions out of the box. Starts some great conversations about how things work.

Largely agree. In cases with parents trying to support their kids, I've also seen how it can spiral over time into something akin to learned helplessness.
Parent takes over keyboard occasionally, kid increasingly withdraws ➡️ parent does everything, kid becomes passive observer.
My entry for the latest edition of Create Jam did pretty well, despite not being quite functional. Honestly one of my better results!
It didn't take much to get it fixed up and fully playable. Might give it a few more tweaks later.

Three keyhangers, lasercut from a piece of golden acrylic mirror. The shape of the keyhangers are not far from a guitar pick. Engraved on each is an image of a pair of Lurs, a bronze-age wind instrument. The depth of these engraving vary a bit.
We've had a visiting PhD in our section, who's stay is coming to an end. I felt a little parting gift was appropriate.
After all our nice talks about music and danish culture, I thought a keyhanger with a pair of Lurs were fitting.
