A disconsolate Rod Dreher ordering one exorcism after another at his local in Budapest. A manager discreetly tells him that he's cut off and Dreher howls "just gimme the fucking rites" at the barback.

holy shit he actually conceded

folks, they tell you they’re invincible

they tell you they’re inevitable

they tell you that you should give up and stop fighting

and absolutely none of that is true

a weird belief that is held across basically all sectors of American life is that boy dollars and boy votes are better than girl dollars and girl votes and so if you have a lot of the latter you need to be constantly trying to exchange them for the former

possibly a useless suggestion but if you have access to a public or academic library system that offers Interlibrary Loan there are 415 holdings listed for the first Knopf edition in WorldCat!

I would definitely read that!

she can definitely be vaguer in press than she needs to be though! I would have appreciated both an acknowledgement that there's a lot of person-first coaches now and a list of names of coaches she considers assholes

I think it makes more sense if you consider just how long she's been at UCLA/coaching generally--ideas like "athletes have lives outside of sports" and "you don't need to be yelling at these teens all the time" were genuinely getting her mocked fifteen years ago

A quoted tweet that says "I'm suspicious of anything that is picking up steam du to what amounts to privileged white nostalgia at the end of the world." The original tweet reads: "The whole books campaign is picking up steam. I'm not opposed to reading entire books. But be careful, this is where you get summaries and general overviews. If you want close analysis and drawing meaning from the text...students have to get to specific passages."

Kids are being denied access to books because of a toxic mix of deficit thinking and corporate control enabled by state governments. Now, in the place of books, students are getting slop designed in the name of test prep.

It's exhausting to defend access to books from both the right and the left.

UCLA crushes South Carolina to win NCAA women's basketball national championship Behind standout efforts from Lauren Betts and Gabriela Jaquez, the UCLA women's basketball team defeats South Carolina 79-51 for its first national title since 1978.

“It’s truly indescribable."

but also, probably something she could have just skipped considering I only had the necessary context from years of following UCLA basketball specifically and hearing her talk about her coaching goals at length, something most of the audience hasn't done 🤷‍♀️

yeah, I can see that! I think Close could stand to be less clumsy as a speaker sometimes (e.g. her weird unnecessary defense of the BIG 10 vs BIG 12). I do feel 100% sure this wasn't directed at Staley, who she's often described as "the standard" in both coaching and off-court relationship building

based on past interviews with her I'm guessing she means taking a more compassionate, person-first approach to coaching (like handling Lauren's mental health and having to take time away in her sophomore year). Possibly a dig at self-described "hardass"/"old school" coaches like Geno or Walz

love that they keep quoting Dawn saying she doesn't want Geno's bad behavior to be a distraction from her players, while they're letting it be a distraction from her players!

It is obviously very bad that a demented old man is mashing the big red “kill random people” button his desk. But the real problem is that the button is there in the first place.

People often preface posts with “not to be a Reddit atheist but—“ and I really don’t think that’s necessary. This country absolutely needs a militant “get religion out of government” movement right now. Any person of sincere religious conviction should 100% agree with that and be a part of it

Kim Mulkey looks like her name should Muffett Mcgraw, Muffet McGraw looks like her name should be Tara Vanderveer. Geno Auriemma looks like his name should be Pat Summitt and Pat Summit looked like her name should've been Kim Mulkey.
Tara Vanderveer just looks like her name is Martha

I do not understand swapping fandoms when you move, sports fandom is a mental illness you don’t simply choose a different one of your own free will

There's a long, bad journalistic tradition: All conservative grass-roots political movements are fascinating heartland phenomena, all progressive grass-roots political movements are ineffectual bleating. This one is written off as powered by white female college grads--the wine-moms slur, basically.

W.E.B. Du Bois: “Either he knew what slavery meant when he helped maim and murder thousands in its defense, or he did not. If he did not he was a fool. If he did, Robert Lee was a traitor and a rebel - not indeed to his country, but to humanity and humanity’s God.”
