The event brought together researchers from 14 nationalities, from Europe to Japan, through Central Asia and the Near East.
It concluded on a moving note as L. Iakovleva (Kyiv) reminded us of the challenges of doing science amid geopolitical turmoil — ending with a heartfelt “Vive la paix!” 🇫🇷🕊️

This inspiring meeting, supported by the GPR Human Past and my project Threads, was initiated by our dear colleague T. Tsanova, a former PACEA PhD student.
It celebrated her rediscovery of Bacho Kiro Cave and her findings showing H. sapiens in SE Europe 45 ka ago.
With @lucdoyon.bsky.social , we discussed how beads and bone tool technology can help trace the dispersal of Homo sapiens across Eurasia.
Our colleague N. Zwyns (PACEA) shared new insights on the IUP in mainland Asia (~45 ka), and P. Zhang (PACEA) presented on stone tool tech in China MIS 3.

Beads of shells and teeth from Abri Murat (Rocamadour, Lot) reveal long-distance networks linking Atlantic, Mediterranean, and inland groups 15,000+ years ago @cnrsecologie.bsky.social @univbordeaux.bsky.social
#PressRelease 🗞️ The oldest workshop for making shell jewellery has been unearthed at the Palaeolithic site of La Roche-à-Pierrot. 🐚
👉 www.cnrs.fr/en/press/old...
🐚 The littorina, characterized by a wide range of natural colors when fresh, originate from the Atlantic coast, situated about 100 km away from La Roche-à-Pierrot at the time of the occupation (7/20)
🐚 🔬Microscopic analyses by @solangerigaud.bsky.social revealed that perforated shells show no wear, and pigment staining comes from nearby hematite. With 14 intact shells, little/no wear, and high fragmentation, the evidence supports a shell ornament workshop (8/20)

Last week’s interdisciplinary residency at Maison Bordes, Les Eyzies, with PhD students & postdocs from Sci Archéo & Environnement. Great practice in non-specialist writing & reflecting on societal relevance. River swims & a ride back to Bordeaux! @cnrsecologie.bsky.social @univbordeaux.bsky.social
Just out! we challenge the long-standing tradition of defining Upper Paleolithic cultures primarily through stone tool artefacts. Instead, we turn to personal ornaments to explore cultural identities during the past shorturl.at/8mxKe @univbordeaux.bsky.social @cnrsecologie.bsky.social

From the field in Cyprus: traditional tribulum at our host’s place. This was a common threshing tool in Mediterranean agriculture until recently. Flint flakes and cores to produce them frequently found during surveys with @umr5608traces.bsky.social @nxcco.bsky.social @cnrsecologie.bsky.social
