And I am not letting AI, or people with a narrow stereotype of how normal humans write, deter me from using them. The thoughtful pauses are a legitimate part of my voice, and I'm not editing them out.
I understand how vital it is to recognize slop. Just remember, there ARE humans who use em dashes.
One of those pauses is the em dash. It's longer than a comma, not quite as final as a period— most similar to an ellipsis, but with a different connotation. When I use an em dash, it tends to be a mark to indicate a natural pause to think about what I'm saying next, whether it's a digression or not.
It's not just that em dashes can serve as alternatives to colons or parentheses, or that you can attribute quotes with them, or that you can use them to indicate when incomplete sentences trail off.
When I write, I have my own voice in my head— a voice with a pace, with pauses of various lengths.
It's a matter of taste. When used properly, em dashes are actually a remarkably versatile punctuation mark. And I refuse to stop using them just because LLMs somehow picked them up as some sort of recognizable tic.
Because fuck AI, I used them first. I'm not letting ChatGPT steal that from me.
And furthermore— I'm not sorry for using them.
I have used em dashes in my prose for DECADES. Certainly a lot longer than AI has been a thing. Because I understand what they're used for, and when I write, I tend to have tangential things I want to say, and I prefer parentheses for smaller asides.
Sorry, this has been bugging me for a while, and I need to vent.
Common AI spotting advice: "One way you can tell if something was written by an AI is the usage of em dashes. Because, seriously, what human actually uses those? Nobody writes like that."
Me. I do. *I* write like that. Always have.
"Talent", as you're describing, is a word to refer to a person's natural aptitude for a specific skill. I won't argue that doesn't exist. But aptitude without effort is meaningless. If you don't invest your time honing your skill, it doesn't develop. 95% of art is what one chooses to put into it.

From left to right, a certain witch (xbc9's character), Blaire, and Mona survey the aftermath of a horse transformation spell that the witch attempted to cast on Blaire and Mona. Blaire, however, was able to partially reflect the spell back at the witch. As a result, the witch was turned into a rather surprised centaur with a black horse body, Blaire was given the head, front hooves, and tail of a grey horse, and Mona was entirely turned into a brown horse. All three are naked, aside from ACW's witch hat, Blaire's earrings and fishnet sleeves, and Mona's glasses and necklace. Blaire is kneeling on both knees looking up at the witch, and the two have a brief dialogue exchange. Blaire: Okay, okay, uh... *neeeeigh!* I think we ought to just call this a draw and cut our losses, don't you? ACW: Yeah... I feel that would be for the best... *neeeigh!!*
