This feed listens to the Bluesky firehose and emits triplets of posts that, when read in order, produce a haiku. I’ve done some basic filtering, but there isn’t any quality control so the poems are a bit hit or miss, but I’ve still found it strangely meditative to scroll through the feed!

I don’t have much time in my life for fun hack projects these days, but I’ve always wanted to learn how custom Bluesky feeds work, so I managed to sneak some hacking in over the weekend while the kids were sleeping and built a “Found Haikus” feed: bsky.app/profile/dfm....

Don’t worry - we’re still repping open publishing models over here… 😍

Now that I don’t work in astro research anymore (and because I’m on parental leave), it is time to retire from @joss-openjournals.bsky.social. It’s been an amazing 5 years supporting open source software in academic astrophysics, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for JOSS!

Given the groans that echo through the entire astronomical community every time it hits the news again, I'm not sure this is a fact that needs to be publicized… 🫠

Advent of Code 2024

Now that I write code as a full-time job, I didn't think I would do adventofcode.com this year, but I couldn't stop myself. I just finished collecting all the stars, and it was great fun as always! Thanks for the fun ride, @was.tl!

So bad! We haven't seen the "baby loves" books yet, so I'm glad to hear that there are some better options in the genre 😀

When my kid was born, we were gifted all of those "Science X for Babies" books (IYKYK), and at 1.5 he has decided that they are the only books we ever read just to spite us…

At least he reaches for "Bayesian Probability" more frequently than "Astrophysics", proving that he's my child! 🤣

Prompted by this and a need for distraction I Did Some Math. Turns out most extrasolar planets are quite cauliflower-compatible. A thread, with citations. And laboratory astrophysics. And footnotes.

tinygp — tinygp

The values there are actually used as an initial guess for the optimization. It is circular, but in any real world application you'll also need to provide decent (whatever that means :D) initial guesses.

I mostly point people to tinygp.readthedocs.io instead of george but either should be ok.

Actually, I lied. You can use:

from numpy import sin as sine

but (I think?) not

import numpy.sin as sine

So there is a difference in that direction. But for modules they should be the same!

I don't think there is any difference! I certainly use the two interchangeably and I'm having trouble thinking up potential pitfalls…

Some news: in a few weeks I'll be leaving the Flatiron Institute to join Google DeepMind where I'll be working on the JAX core dev team.

It's bittersweet to leave astro which (for better or worse) has defined much of my identity for the past 15 years, but I'm excited about new adventures!

Thrilled to announce an event I've long been thinking about! Join us at Yale University for a "Hack Day Conference," in which a group of educators come together to build resources and exercises for teaching research methods in astronomy. See astrocodex.github.io for more.

I once (many years ago) followed a recipe for pesto which included "3 garlics", and I said "3 full garlics is way too much… let's start with just 1!" It was almost edible.

Part 2 of day 1 was so much more tricky than it should have been as a warm up! I definitely would recommend doing whatever you can to just move past it 😀

Haha! Yeah, "finishing AofC" is always a big ask so we'll see how far we get this year… 🤣
