Are the gears on the right or left side of the bike? If they are on the left, then it was flipped when assembled and you’ll have to take the crank out and redo it.

You can absolutely coast with a coaster brake. Every kid who ever had a 20” hike with no handbrakes can attest to that fact. You cannot, however, backpedal with a coaster brake as that is what stops the hub.
