It’s clear he’s slipping. He used to have good political instincts, this would be one of those situations where he’d let dark money do the work because he’s politically toxic in VA, but he can’t help himself now. Ah well

I was at the game from Moneyball where the As came back to win their 20th in a row. It was dollar dog night; one of my buddies ate 8 hot dogs, got sick, and left before the comeback. I ate 2 chipwiches and felt glorious (after a few moments of queasiness).

Well darth, you may think that I am extremely basic for this opinion, but I very much feel that mass culture and possibly popular cuisine peaked with the chipwich. There’s nothing better than one of these in the afternoon sun at the ballpark. Unless it’s two of these.

Yes! No blog required. They have to do a podcast, I’m pretty sure that’s the policy.

Criticizing “Revenge of the Nerds” not because of its appalling gender politics but because some nerds don’t deserve revenge

Fear of missing out is much more motivating than fear of having overinvested. The people making the decision won’t be on the hook in the latter case and will be exorbitantly compensated in the former. The incentives are all mixed up.

On point. These guys wrap themselves in the flag to deflect any criticism of their cash grab. They're basically high-tech bank robbers who insist that bank robbery is the price we must pay for freedom.

The Venn diagram of people decrying the supposed decline of standards because of DEI and the folks who routinely boost racist posts based on obvious lies is indistinguishable from a circle

Agreed, with the addendum that no kids -> kids is phase change and significantly muddies these waters for a few years.

A good read. My high-level take here is that “what’s wrong with universities?” and “what’s driving public mistrust with universities?” are different questions and people often answer one when asked about the other.

Just horrifying to watch once excellent universities voluntarily destroying themselves.

aahhhh, but what are the odds the people would ever turn on the beloved telecommunications companies? Not in my risk matrix, I tell you.

Was it "instinct for crowd work" or "note-perfect timing" when he just swayed to YMCA and GNR for 40 minutes at a rally that got interrupted because of 2 medical emergencies?

Was showing the 6 year old how sums of odd numbers are related to square numbers, both graphically and with numbers, and it's amazing what those little brains can soak in and understand. They're just hungry to understand the world, it's so cool.

All disciplines develop their own jargon to be more precise or as a shorthand to convey common information. Disciplines that are adjacent to policy will naturally have some bleed of that jargon into public discourse, which, as you say, is completely different from politicians using it on the regular

seems pretty clear that the best way to help people in deep red areas is to invest in more local elections and do good governance at the federal level. Bloklahoma lives in a parallel universe with unimaginable laws of physics at this point.

Also, most airports are way nicer and have much better amenities than a decade ago. It’s not so bad to spend a few extra minutes at the airport, it’s awful to deal with a missed flight and all of the repercussions.
